S4E1: Heat

Thats right folks, it's a whole new season, it's a whole new look (Courtesy of John Delucca), it's a whole new us! But in most of the really critical ways it is very much the same us.

It's time for the long-awaited "Heist Szn"(sic)- and we open with a little film called Heat. You may have heard of it.

Joining us is Dr. M.R. Geldof, host of the Dr Violence podcast!

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live. They deserve to survive.

Val Kilmer reloads his M733 ;) Was on and of about subscribing because i already sub WTYP and TF and money you know. But Seeing tgis brought me to be a patreon, a marvellous job and looking forward to a lot of content. Good day all

magi

That movie taught me to make my battle plans rhyme to enhance memorization. Also I'd love to see how they talk about the death penalty, the treatment of the black prisoner and the indigenous prisoner, and Telly Savalas' psychotic hatred of women

Andrew Dunn

Also when you realize that John Cusack is 28 YEARS OLD you'll have a heart attack

Andrew Dunn

accidentally watched this movie for the first time while wearing my goncharov movie poster shirt, which has both pacino and de niro on it. very silly coincidence! also, re: rockstar games lifting things from this movie, i'm surprised nobody mentioned the fact that micah bell is just 1890s waingro (almost down to the facial hair)!

Peter Paul Rubens' Muse

Came here to say this!! I would give anything to hear them talk about Logan Lucky!

Lauren Shear

K.

Madelyn

It is FASCINATING to hear the scum score discussion on this in the wake of the United Health Insurance CEO assassin

Maxi Mailloux

After hearing this I'm really interested to hear your take on Grosse Point Blank, which actually tries to address this same world of males who are defined by their violence and alienation and also have a woman's perspective. (And Hank Azaria.) I don't want to contribute to any preconceptions by saying whether it succeeds or fumbles it, but it definitely does one of the two. It's not quite a heist movie, it's an assassin movie, but I think it can be stretched to fit. (Then again, I've been saying that since Bond season.)

JoeNotCharles

Fair point lol

LACON B VAIL

I didn't bother pointing that out, given that no-one cared about Henry Rollins.

Dr. M.R. Geldof

Dont know if anyone else mentioned this but the contact at the club is Tone Loc. Think Funky Cold Medina and Wild Thing

LACON B VAIL

KANE AND LYNCH REFERENCE

Dannysaysnoo

The Airfield scene reminds me of Bullitt 1968 with Steve McQueen

Lillie S.

Petition for "unprovoked violence" to be partially used to rate the robbers' reasoning for their heist?

Man2quilla

There was this movie about robbers feeling the HEAT from cops, and how they dealt with the HEAT, and some of them craved the HEAT. …I think it was called “the heist that couldn’t slow down”.

Allana Langen

The Unit reference, Nova you are not helping the parasocial relationship

Ezra

"Ashley Judd was cheating on Val Kilmer with Hank Azaria" is not a sentence I'd have ever thought I'd need to say.

Jon W

For anyone interested: https://youtu.be/DFMtTF0hgBE?si=FfFHGJdWqfQAhoM_

Alma Blue

Something I'd want to add, you all mentioned the North Hollywood Shootout, and I believe Dr. Geldof pointed out it happened *after* the movie, even weirder, according to wikipedia, one of the two shooters had a copy of Heat in his VHS player.

Gabe

On one hand I hesitate to suggest it because it doesn't really lend itself to a beat-by-beat plot summary, but it is an *experience*, and I think it has things to say about being an artist and making art for its own sake that I'd love to hear the hosts' take on Everyone should at least check out the trailer for the fantastic bank robbery/concert

Jørgen Lund

You gotta revisit Daniel Craig by doing his heist movie Logan Lucky!!!

Adria Reed

I'd like to suggest The Dirty Dozen as a heist movie. It is technically a war movie but it has all the elements of a heist.

Perry

After watching The People's Joker I like to think about other The People's movies. The People's Heat

John

Idk why, but y'all should watch The Fugitive

Man2quilla

As November mentioned with Payday: The Heist, in the original game when you go loud in the bank, the AI heisters will actually paraphrase the rehearsed speech from Heat, table-climbing and all. Obviously Payday 2 leaned in even further with a set of heists themed after the armored transport heist from the start of the movie, including a bunch of references-- plus the hockey masks.

Stephen Gilbert

Came here to say the same, I'd kill (james bond) for a poster

Parker Squirrell

SOUND OF NOISE not a heist movie but follows all the beats of a heist movie. Thank you for teaching me the beats of a heist movie. My favorite film, Sound of Noise, has a “put the team together” scene, a cop hunting them down, and a bank robbery where they steal a performance!

Elizabeth Solomon

Please make merch featuring that art. I need it on my wall. Or on a t-shirt. But mostly on my wall.

Rianne Werring

When I was in college I took a film directing course and one of our assignments was to pick a dialogue scene between two characters from a film we hadn’t scene and direct two classmates (who also hadn’t scene the film) performing the scene in front of the class. One of my classmates picked the diner scene between DeNero and Pacino and asked (pre-transition) me to play the Pacino part. The one note he kept giving me was “remember, this guy’s wife just left him” and in retrospect I think he wanted me to give a bigger, more emotional performance. He wanted that coked up Pacino energy but I wasn’t really able to give that. I felt like this was a scene of two cats circling each other in an alley before a fight and that the fireworks would come later so I played it very cautiously and understated. I’m a terrible actor (and obviously awful at taking direction) but I do feel a little vindicated finally watching the film all these years later and seeing how Pacino plays this scene.

Paige

Kinda surprised they didn't recognise Tom Noonan, who was indeed in Manhunter but was also Cain in Robocop 2. Point Break I think is worth a look as it is a robbery film and has a fair bit to say about masculinity. To be honest a good chunk of Kathryn Bigelow's work is worth having a look at including Near Dark for when you do Horror Season.

Delwyn Gee

The meta-ness of her anxiety over being forgotten and then literally being forgotten by the characters and the viewer. Pacino's character showing knowledge of medicine by demanding an exact regimen of care with specific specialists

Andrew Dunn

Guest had to repeat himself to make sure they heard him

Andrew Dunn

Never mind Val's reload, the scene where Bobby D (or his body double) runs across the runway like a 5 year old girl running for the ice cream van is hilarious

Louise Duke

I dissociated when the guest said “that’s actually Henry Rollins” and the hosts had next to zero reaction

A Gaggle of Geckos

I haven't finished the episode but wanted to come in and say here how obsessed I am with the new artwork. Incredible detail, just stunning

Clare

weird to me that nova completely bounced off the suicide attempt scene, i thought it was really affecting as like the one human moment of genuine care and concern in the entire film

Adepta Sororitas hazing ritual

Great start to the season!

Orion666

Absolutely seconded. Take my money

BarFly

Wishcasting for Robbery Season: Sneakers and the sister movie Hackers!

Justin Johns

There's a scene in the Miami Vice episode Calderone's Return: Part 1 where a hitman (played by the show's firearms instructor) pulls off a blisteringly fast quickdraw and Mozambique which has similarly been used in training programs. Mann loves Gun Competence.

BarFly

Gorgeous kickoff to Robbery Season. I'm putting my marker down: hoping for some of the adaptations of Donald Westlake's Parker novels which codified the Dispassionate Crime Guy Point Blank: the greatest Neo Noir Parker: surprisingly good The Split: guys I love to see Payback: make sure you decide which version to watch

BarFly

This season's poster is absolutely gorgeous 😍

ComicTF

i like the implication that abi had such a bad goatee that she simply had to transition

Ysa

"Like a cheap suit" is a phrase that my mother uses, so it's funny to hear it invoked as a piece of cool Michael Mann-type Crimes Guy argot. Mid century slang is just like that I guess.

BarFly

Absolutely love this Robert McGinnis style season art.

BarFly

That new Cover art slaps so incredibly hard! I am very hyped for robbery szn!

Meonlights

At the Val Kilmer reload bit and thinking about the scene from collateral where tom cruise (as Vincent Collateral) quick draws on those hoodlums and how that used in quickdraw training programs cuz he was that good at it. Michael mann owns, lol

iaguz

One Heat Minute really is a conceptually brilliant podcast that has some good and bad episodes, but also due to its nature dives so deep into every little decision made by every member of the cast and crew and gives you an incredible insight into both the production and the mania of people who will do a podcast like One Heat Minute. If you enjoy Heat it really is worth listening to.

Anders Russell

One of the episodes of One Heat Minute is an interview with an Australian Federal Police organised crime guy who is friends with the podcast host. He is extremely clear that in his eyes the correct move was to arrest them for the break and enter, because then you have six months of them not taking scores, and also six months to run down every lead and see what you can pin on them.

Anders Russell

Please please do Public Enemies with Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard.

Saint Muerte

Hey, I don't know if anyone's reading comments at this point, but I want to give my highest recommendation to Michael Mann's commentaries. If you can get your hands on a DVD with commentary for "Collateral", "Heat", etc. then do it. It's fascinating. He's got this workaday attitude about filmmaking that's enigmatic. On the one hand, what he says sounds impossibly simple. On the other hand, that simplicity is the point. He is fixated on "How does this scene serve the plot" and it's such a damn pleasure to see how that informs the film, because so many directors who don't hew to such basic principles go for flash instead, and it comes out as shit.

Ol' Firebones

Don't know if you're taking requests/suggestions, but for a robbery movie with things to say about masculinity, I hope you do Point Break some time.

Marsupial8192

Also his dynamic with Pitt’s character is 100% “Ex with whom he’s had a messy breakup with but that’s in the past and they settle into an old relationship dynamic easily” Also in one of those movies part of the plan involves “salting and inciting a strike in a factory”

John Leavitt

That's a live show fit!

any acronym... thats who YOU ARE

10/10 episode art!

any acronym... thats who YOU ARE

Is Kelly's Heroes a heist movie?

Bob

dev's fit in the new art is fantastic, absolute gender goals

mira_drgn

The guest was incredible! Please bring him back for more episodes

Forest Joy and Shahar Shrek

If you're looking for a heist movie about Women, do Bound (1996) if it isn't already on the list. It's about lesbians, which are a type of woman.

SleepinBelle

Based on everything that's happened since the release of Payday 2, I'm convinced that game was the biggest fluke success ever.

Sammi

Please please please make this artwork a poster we can buy and hang on our wall!

Jimothy

I've said it before: the heist in Ocean's 11 only holds together because George Clooney's character is actually a witch. Looking forward to seeing what you all think of it.

Jack Fennell

For a heist, coldness is better

Andrew Dunn

Franz Copfka to his wife: "My chains. Don't touch my motherfucking chains!"

Noblesse Oblahaj

I'm fine with games cribbing Michael Mann. The Heat shootout rocked in GTA 4 and 5, it rocked in Payday 2- it's great, always. But the sound is never as good as Michael Manns. I want that gunfire to be as good as Bad Company 2 with war tapes on. I want that gunfire to rattle my teeth

Noblesse Oblahaj

Can't wait for the baby driver episode!

Erin Taylor

That is a fucking great new art

Peter Larkin

There is a very well researched book, NORCO ‘80 on the subject. The shootout, which wrecked dozens of cop cars, brought a helicopter down, and led to a miles long police chase into the mountains, was responded to by cops armed almost exclusively with revolvers and shotguns and one officer who stole an M16 from an evidence locker. The author made a decent case that that shootout in particular was the turning point for the militarization of the police in the U.S. that started bringing Glocks, body armor, and “assault rifle” style weapons into police armories.

Alex Anderson

The Heat Diner Conversation is peak storytelling, change my mind.

hailthefish

I am begging you to sell posters of the new art. do whatever you want with me just give me the printssssss

Jay Galbraith

I like to imagine that the morning after the ending scene, Al Pacino's cop boss called him into the office to explain why they had the gang who had just done a mass shooting and killed half the department caught red handed breaking and entering a deserted warehouse at night without their assault rifles and with a SWAT team on full alert, but let them go. Imagine explaining that as "well I didn't want to book them for such a chickenshit felony".

OvO Hoot

Second this.

chris

The Mozambique Drill is referenced in Titanfall 2 & Apex Legends with the Mozambique Pistol. That's why it is in a pyramidal tri-barrel gun. 2 side by side in the chest and one above for the head.

chris

Since the first heist is in the film "Heat", I suggest measuring the qualities of a heist in temperature. If this movie is the ideal human temp which is, according to the WHO, 18°C, then better or worst heists go up or down the thermostat. Don't know what direction better or worst would be though.

chris

Not gonna lie, the bit where the hosts claim that the crew’s unprovoked violence is something you’re meant to think is based and correct made me want to a 10-hit combo on some drywall. My good hosts, the reason the shootout is that loud and destructive and violent is because it’s when all of Neil’s crew crosses a moral line. The crew does not care about ANYONE in the way of their goals, and this is something the film is explicitly condemnatory of. Did you think the wreckage of the shootout was just set dressing?

Ineloquent Reverie

Yeah I know but November wasn’t on that episode, and I want to hear Abby talk about Ben Kingsley’s performance

Dean Sartorel

Britainology (one of the Trash Future spinoffs) did that a few months ago.

Brian Taulbee

THE ART!!!!!!

Peter Paul Rubens' Muse

Eventually you need to do the movie Sexy Beast as an odd ball heist season movie

Dean Sartorel

I think the staying power of the bank heist really sums itself up to me by the fact that in effect, I am making an entire board game based on it and its children. That one scene is something that could spawn a multi-million dollar franchise and, potentially if I get some fucking initiative a tactical board game. …Downtown Withdrawal, hopefully on sale some time within the 2020s.

Ineloquent Reverie

the one and only exposure ive had to Heat prior to this was the Chris Flemming bit where he describes it as one of the all time great gay American films, and the phrase "he's got the bouffant of a former nun" is still rattling around in my head

LCB Meyneth

Very excited for Heist Season. Can I recommend The Good Thief by Neil Jordan.

Jacob King

I'm amazed nobody made a Dr Kaufman reference when you had a doctor in violence studies...

Visphendant

"Heat 2 (Women)"? You mean Sugar & Spice (2001)?

Brian Danger Hicks

What a great episode. The comment at the end about the similarities between cops and crooks in this genre makes me think that this is why Miami Vice is so good. It makes the cops the ones doing the heists (for ostensibly good reasons). Best of both worlds.

Brian Taulbee

November talked about the possibility that there is a movie that scores a 0 in all categories on the scum spectrum. Set It Off is that movie for me.

November Snow

"that was the actors real reaction" stories are always bullshit

Andrew Dunn

Sneakers is like, insanely prescient about how technology and government would interact

John Leavitt

I knew I would make that mistake, since they are both in this.

Dr. M.R. Geldof

Looking up the Norco shootout Dr Violence mentioned as a possible inspiration, "[...]five men armed with shotguns, a G3 rifle, HK93s, handguns, AR-15s, a katana and an improvised explosive device robbed the Norco branch of Security Pacific Bank." Without reading any further, I am inclined to say dudes rock.

Raymond Price

Ted Levine played Buffalo Bill, not the Tooth Fairy.

Doug King

Not just marines, that Val reload scene was shown to in me in army bootcamp repeatedly. Reloading may not be a gender, but it's definitely a kink judging by how the ssgt's drooled over this scene

Bilbro T. Baggins

Awesome episode. Wonder if Sneakers will get covered.

James Rule

ooooh shit PLEASE make that art purchasable!

Ros Ballinger

So keen for the rest of this season! (Also, no excuse for suggesting it but please watch Shallow Grave (1994) for a bonus ep sometime. Absolutely fire movie and Christopher Eccleston is amazing in it.)

Rosemary Selth

Loooove the new logo!!!!

Jack Holmes

Zwxp

fred henning

Had to stop the podcast to watch the gunfight. Gods damn that's an amazing gun fight. Also, to counteract the overwhelming maleness of a lot of the heist movies, KJB could do "Set It Off".

Ben Schwabe

November on the "1 Minute of Heat" podcast, that I also haven't listened to, reminded me of that one Dr. Who writer who heard about the concept of TNG's "Darmok." He said he never watched it, just wanted to think about it forever.

Gary Alexander

The new artwork fucks, let's gooo

Thomas Noriega

Unreasonably excited for the Oceans!

Tall Jeff

Holy moly, that art

Christine Pizan

I'm so happy ;_;

moss

I'm guessing Nate Bethea, the editor and occasional guest on this pod.

Raymond Price

Who’s the fourth person in the new (absolutely fucking awesome) art?

Brian Taulbee

Man, that’s some killer new art. Looking up the artist asap.

Tuur Verheyde

oh the art was absolutely worth the wait i'm obsessed

miniplane

I want that art framed on my wall like I want that twink obliterated

Alex

...wait this isnt the patreon? i am confusestet

Gilded Dragon

OMG

Ol' Firebones

Does Elysium count as a heist film?

Bilbro T. Baggins

Please release the new art as print we can buy. Something something capitalism

Nora Lloyd

Very November to get a Mountain Goats cover artist

Samantha

This is the podcasting event of the decade

Ineloquent Reverie

Letsgooooooo

Frank Leonard

I can’t believe I got beat to “drop of a hat these guys rock and roll” by the title roll

Tyler

Finally! Heist Season is here! With fantastic new art to boot!

Doug King

That new art is incredible

Nah

Havnt even hit play but That Art is already at 10/10

PigeonTom

T shirt when?

Friend of the show

I honestly never really *got* what Payday was going for until I watched this movie.

Ean Manley

Also i love that this is the movie that lead to the creation of payday 2 ( / the heist), the worst best co op shooter ever

Tecro 47

Babe wake up, new Season KJB just dropped
