S4E1.5: Alps

It's Nova's Bonus so you'd better believe we're right back at it again with the Yorgos Lanthimos, we're talking about Alps- a movie about a group of people who start a company where they impersonate bereaved people's deceased relatives to help them through the grieving process.

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live.

S4E1.5: Alps

Comments

I don’t think I’ll ever watch this one. Even hearing them

Spidlerlope

Paul WS Anderson, the indisputable king of wife-guy directors. Neil Marshall a solid second.

Ambrose Watson

I wonder if Alp is aluding to alptraum or nightmare, alp being elf and the actors being some sort of changeling

Gilded Dragon

This is not what I was told would happen when you find a stranger in the Alps.

Michael Tonus

Only Yorgos film I ever saw was "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" and I thought it was kinda whatever but it is funny to think Sunny Suljic has had a worse 'father' in movies than he did as Kratos' son.

iaguz

'You can't get consent from an improv comedian unless it's an enthusiastic yes and' is one of the greatest lines in KJB history

Jason Grainger

I recently watched The fully monty for the first time, and I would love to hear the gang talk about the 90s take on masculinity. Or having watched the Spice Girls movie I need to hear everyone talk about the fits in it.

Finlay Hazlitt

I meant John Woo's The Killer with Chow Yun Fat - I'd assume that paired with Hard Boiled, Devon would have spotted that.

Nah

The Killer with Fassbender is literally just a HITMAN: WoA movie with the numbers filed off

John Leavitt

It’s one of the most bi-curious (dude edition) movie ever made

John Leavitt

The remake is a wildly different movie to the point of I shy from calling it a remake but it is one of the most GWB first admin 9-11 movies ever made, the man passed a massive vibe check (If they do the original I hope they pick up on the fact that Frank Sinatra’s character is 100% supposed to be read as gay and glass closeted at his job and that Kim Novak scene makes ZERO sense unless you mentally replace her with an equivalently attractive man who may or may not be cruising hm/honeypotting him)

John Leavitt

oh another suggestion that will please probably exactly one listener: the lost skeleton of cadavera. it's extremely quotable and says something about masculinity maybe

the sharpest marble

detective heart of america: the final freedom. it has merman jesus and the great nation of SLAMZONE

the sharpest marble

"The Lord alps those who alp themselves." -Groucho Marx (This is actually a Groucho line, can't remember what movie)

Andrew Dunn

❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for the shout out, I really appreciate it!

Hannah Oberhardt

I would love to hear some Mamoru Oshii episodes if you ever return to the anime well- Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor 2, Angel's Egg, there are others

nastypass

Yes they would make a shitload of hay out of it. Abigail always says, "Nabokov has logged on". Another one I just thought of, The American with George Clooney. The movie is about being transgender*. I read the novel it was based on, and it's interesting, the character says he's apolitical but is clearly a fascist. *Not textually, I mean in the way they discuss it on the podcast.

Andrew Dunn

Leon: The Professional would be another fun one to cover for a hypothetical assassin season. Outstanding cast, and Gary Oldman plays drug-addled crazy like no other

Jimothy

Not an episode request but am entire season request: assassin season. When I was a kid, I would get euphoria at the sight of someone assembling a rifle from a suitcase. I told myself that if God didn't exist therefore morality didn't exist, I would become a hitman. (I later became an atheist but surprisingly did not become a professional killer because it still felt wrong somehow.) Day of the Jackal is incredible, and the current series says some stuff about the morality of British intelligence

Andrew Dunn

Dalton was the first PhilosophyTube.

Andrew Dunn

Angela Lansbury playing a communist spy ftw Also the remake had incredible actors in it. I only watched it once when I was a child but it has Denzel, Felix Leiter, Sabertooth, and Meryl Streep(?)

Andrew Dunn

you could do manchurian candinate. since it has frank sinatra aswell. and is very thematic to our conspiracy milenium.

SunRaTheThird

crash - 1996, the cronenberg one.

sirob kcin

sorry if this is too late to act on but i would love an episode about road house. no film has ever had more to say about masculinity, all of it completely incomprehensible

The Real Werewolves of London

That's got to be just a mainline series right?

GJH

From what I understand everyone got done wrong. I remember reading that Naomi Watts got really done. Still I love the film I can see sparks of genius. It is up there with hackers as one of my top recommendations

GJH

Classic in the woman does own hair in sink and it looks fabulous genre. As parodied in The Spy Who Dumped Me.

Cate Kneale

They did Lori Petty wrong.

Cate Kneale

Just found out that Yorgos has a photobook of pictures taken with a large format camera and I'm trying not to obsess. Still, Xmas present idea for November, if anyone out there needs one!

Cate Kneale

I still think Persepolis would make a good companion piece to sex and the city 2 so I'm just throwing that out there.

Damien Tonkin

Not for nothing, but Bottle Rocket is technically a heist film...

James Rule

While Twilight can be fun, they should just jump right to The Breaking Dawn part 1 and 2. Those movies are crazy.

James Rule

Idea for a bonus: "The Beast" (La Bête) 2023. Surrealist. Looping. Detailed.

Dellamoux

Devon, not sure if you're still looking for bonus episode recs but The Fifth Element could be fun if you're open to something along the lines of a sci-fi/action/comedy.

Jimothy

Also Lance Reddick (RIP) from The Wire shows up.

Simon Anlezark

As warning: one scene a character makes a transphobic joke but immediately gets punched in the face.

Simon Anlezark

Next bonus: there is a 2014 film called The Guest which is a heap of fun. It stars Dan Stevens as a man who shows up at the house of a family grieving the loss of their son in Afghanistan, claiming to be a friend of their son. He becomes entangled in their lives and soon wreaks havoc on them and their town. It’s got a banger soundtrack, great action, Things to Say About The Military Industrial Complex, and is frequently quite funny. Strong recommend for the podcast but also just for a watch. Would tie nicely in with Rambo discussions.

Simon Anlezark

I'd suggest Tank Girl it's a hot mess.

GJH

I ought to put a clause in my will about who is or is not allowed to Alp me. I have been HUNGERING for heist and caper season and I am desperate for Sneakers.

Penwize

Or in keeping with the ?rule? National Treasure 2

Tall Jeff

Suggestion for Dev's pick - big trouble in little China

Matt

YOU BASTARDS. I've to drop into the shop on the way home now so I can buy some Toblerone.

Bob Murphy

Not that it would have solved everything, but the Alps workers should have unionized.

James Rule

Silly but genuine suggestion for Devon's next pick: National Treasure

M. A. Carroll

Bonus suggestion , twilight, just have some fun with it

PodcastListener

Bonus pick recommendation, y'all should watch The Long Kiss Goodnight.

nowheresoft

I'm with November on this and will not tolerate this "Not impaling the roof of my mouth with toblerone" mentality that has seeped into this podcast

shadowcb

Devon your bonus pick should be either The Killer or Hard Boiled Also November if you are reading this, you once brought up making them watch Wong Kar Wai films, In The Mood For Love WHEN

Nah

Hey quick question, what's up with the upload schedule?

Witch Bitch

The "summit" and "enthusiastic yes and" jokes were too damn good and quick

Andrew Dunn

If you need a short movie for a bonus and want anime, watch Look Back.

ghostnappa

I can't explain why, but this movie puts me in the mind of Bottle Rocket, the first Wes Anderson movie.

Jason Young

Got this notification mere seconds after finishing the film. Still gobsmacked by the ending. Reeling. Floored. Thanks for the tip!

Edith

watched this the other day - keen to hear nova and the gang’s thoughts hey
