S4E3.5: In Order Of Disappearance
Added 2024-12-21 20:07:50 +0000 UTC
This week on the Kill James Bond podcast we're honouring our ironclad commitment to international cinema by checking out this film from a small indie country they're calling 'Norway'. Apparently they could afford Stellan Skarsgard, so really good for them. Helping us to unpack this tale of revenge and isolation is Berlin-based artist and writer Ari Nielsson!

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live. Attached is their gofundme, as well as three others that I can vouch for the authenticity of.

Very interesting listening as someone who's watched Cold Pursuit, liked it, and had no idea it was a remake. Like looking through a Norwegianifying device.
Colorado was definitely the right choice for capturing the 'town vs country' theming of the original, IMO. Makes perfect sense that a crime boss from Denver would be Nepo Baby Joker and it means that the cops get to complain about dumb pot-smoking skiers taking over their town.

Just found out the Swedish title for this move is "En iskall jävel", which translates back to English as either An Ice Cold Devil or An Ice Cold Bastard

yeah theres often like an obligatory. “protag encounters lecherous man and rocks his shit” bit which like to be fair (often) rules but it kind of raises the point that even in films where the “revenge” part isnt explictly motivated by sexual violence/misogyny, a core part of female revenge films is an underlying revenge for the condition of experiencing womanhood itself. I honestly dont know if it would be better or worse if the theme of raging against gendered subjugation was less pervasive cause like it does obviously express an important truth (however badly executed that might be) but it would be nice to have like one film maybe where the only point is “fuck you for killing my dog”. Also theres so much more to misogyny than just sexual violence and not all women experience it primarily in that way but i guess youre not allowed to make movies about ladies that arent young or hot so

"nepo baby of crime" is one viable interpretation of the Joker's "clown prince of crime"

It also kind of sucks how many female movies of revenge center around sexual violence done to them or a daughter. And all of them tend to have an air of sexual menace even when the woman goes on the offensive. Seldom does it feel as if the woman is an empowered vessel of rage that'll go full The Raid and Judge Dress a whole building of motherfuckers

I've seen a lot of revenge movies and it only just occurred to me how few of them have husband and wife going on a rampage where both are into it. Usually if a female love interest is involved, they tend to either be trying to hold the man back, or, the man realizes they've gone too far when she goes feral. It also kind of sucks how many of the revenge movies just use women as a target for sexual violence- the man loses his masculinity because another man "steals it" ( ick, ick ), and must recapture it by dominating another man. I think the last revenge movie i saw that wasn't complete shit was Kevin Bacon's Death Sentence.

I partly grew up in Norway and learned Norwegian from the subtitles on TV. Everything from Discovery Channel to MacGyver meant you got a good range of speech styles and situations to understand

the "roaring rampage of revenge but it's a woman" film abby is looking for is peppermint, considered to be one of the more racist films of 2018

I'm guessing part of the point of the singalong bit was that the song was lame as hell, but I ended up listening to Bjorn Eidsvag as a result.

Norway really does make some movies. Lately I've been delving into their films about the second world war, like Max Manus and The Arctic Convoy.
The tv series Okkupert (Occupied) is also quite good.

Can confirm Norway is 100% subs over dubs country- people are taught English very early on, so practically only kids' media gets dubbed
Unfortunately the Simpsons movie did qualify, so we do have to live with the fact that we cast Atle Antonsen as Norwegian Homer Simpson

I can't think of Stellan Skarsgård without thinking of him strangling Daniel Craig with "Orinoco Flow" playing at full blast. Truly a career-defining scene.

If you want a revenge movie starring a woman, check out Revenge (2017). It's more "harrowing" than "rip-roaring", but I think you all would still get a lot out of it. It's made by the same director as The Substance.

Shock-Racism doesn't really work to get laughs from an audience who has grown up knowing the pretense of 1990s enlightenment was a farce. Like, I can walk into a restaurant and see the exact same shit on live television from the most AI-generated "news" anchor I've ever seen.
