S4E4.5 Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones

Happy New Year from Kill James Bond!

We offered you, on our twitter and bluesky accounts, the chance to vote on a movie for us to cover for this episode. You chose to make us watch the second star wars movie, and let it never be said that the Kill James Bond podcast shies away from adversity. So tonight, on the Free Feed, it's Attack of the Clones!

The aged Galactic Republic is on the brink of war. Separatists, led by the ex-jedi Count Dooku, are poised to break away from the old structures of galactic democracy. And to make matters worse, they even have a robot army. Can the Jedi order quell these feelings? Just how many new zealanders does the republic need to keep itself safe? And can Anakin Skywalker get his dick wet? All this and more

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live. Attached is their gofundme, as well as three others that I can vouch for the authenticity of.

Coming back to this episode to share the theory that my then-roommate and I whispered to one another in the theater back when this came out: Jedi have coercive mind powers, which they use pretty casually to remake aspects of the lives of people around them when those people even slightly inconvenience them. So it *needs* to be a religious tenet not to love specific individuals, because a possessive love would (maybe even subconsciously) exert influence on the object of that possessiveness. So Padme falls in love with this weird creep because his down horrendous thoughts are basically subtly mind controlling her into reciprocating his feelings. Our evidence for this: she starts off extremely disinterested, tries to distance herself multiple times, expresses a lot of discomfort with his attention, and never really develops chemistry with him; but then forgives him with zero pushback when he wants to be forgiven, and agrees to a secret marriage that puts her in *even more* danger than the danger that sent her to hide out at Fuck Planet: Space Italy.

Terra

I've come back to this episode several times in the past couple months. Cannot wait for the Rise of Skywalker episode and its lengthy, thoughtful critique of that film's very important and satisfying galactic espionage subplot.

Dana Himrich

Is there a non-government job in the Star Wars universe other than Smuggler or Bounty Hunter?

Michael Tonus

I think the death star thing is actually extremely funny if you decide that this was fully just the geonosians' idea and the empire just inherited it. Poggle the lesser shows the plan to dooku and he has to call Sheev after to be like "is this one our idea?" It's not like the geonosians weren't also breeding zombification worms at the same time, it's on brand.

Messiah of Rodents

November's disparagement clause has her fulfilling the role of standing beside Caesar (George Lucas) during a triumph (premier) whispering "Remember you are but a man."

Allana Langen

Love the episode, would love to see some more Star Wars episodes in the future (Rogue One now that's it's heist season, maybe), however a grievous error was committed and I fear it must be addressed. While Temuera Morrison is a fantastic actor and has played and voiced Clones in many live action Star Wars projects, he does not voice the Clones in any of the animated Star Wars shows, they are mostly voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, with the exception of Omega and Emerie Karr from The Bad Batch.

Ioan Mather

Jexter has the "cloner" pass.

James Rule

I guess I'm a demographic outlier, because this 57 year old has been in a pretty intense parasocial relationship with KJB for about a year.

Perry

I'm over here contributing to the demographics as an American whose top listened albums included the Arcane soundtrack and the Hazbin Hotel soundtrack.

arbitrary-fascinations

I've been calling the seismic charge a "dubstep bomb" for years, absolutely incredible piece of visual/sound design

Clef (they-them)

I think the focus on desert planets (and I am including Hoth) is because of Dune

Nyktione

Non-human Padawans actually can have a rat tail equivalent like Ashoka’s bead bangle thing. This is also silly because their badge of office is position perfectly to whip them in the face when doing acrobatics.

American Marsupial

I just noticed that all the old episode art is gone, that's weird

Damien Tonkin

Can't believe we got no acknowledgement of the bit in the middle of the final battle where Jedi Council Member Coleman Trebor the Chad Parasaurolophus lights up his saber right next to Dooku in his little vip box and then just immediately gets gunned off the balcony by Jango Fett. Pure cinema.

Tas

Temuera Morrison who plays Django Fett is an amazing actor sorely underutilised in this. Actually his breakout role as Jake the Muss in Once Were Warriors is one of the more gut wrenching roles I've seen. If you get the chance, doing an episode on Once Were Warriors would be good, it goes to the themes of masculinity pretty well if in devastating fashion.

GabrielClyde

If the Acklay is your favorite space beast from Star Wars 2, you are correct! It is the best one objectively.

Dan E

Heartbreaking. November died in the middle of the first episode of the new year. Knew this year was going to be fucked

Jon W

elan sleazebaggano is played by aussie actor matt doran, who also played mouse in the matrix :D shattered there was no mention of the incredible seismic charge BONGGGGGGG sfx. this is easily the movie i rewatched the most as a kid, so it was absolutely delightful to see my fave podcast were doing an ep on it! happy new year all!

Amy Fox

in middle school my best friend long-distance dated a kid she met at violin camp who called himself anakin and had the rat tail

God's Eepiest Soldier

Four stars, go home to your Mother, tell her you're brilliant.

Hugh Kearney

I hate when my dad gets decaffinated in front of me

Tanngnjost

I absolutely died laughing when November mentions the rat tail. I dated a guy in the early 2000s who was in an episode one fan film with his friends, and he had that actual rat tail to play ep 1 Obiwan. Thankfully he cut it off by the time we dated.

Charlie L

George Lucas named the character Count Dooku because he loved Christopher Lee as Dracula. If Christopher Lee had not taken the role, Lucas would have renamed the character. There was an extra on the Clone Attack DVD. It's the Dooku vs. Yoda set. Lee is in full costume. They're bringing in the Yoda reference model. Lucas makes Lee face away until the Yoda model is in position. Lucas tells Lee to turn around. The Yoda model has vampire fangs. Everybody laughs, including Lee who is working very, very hard to remain professional, but it is clear he is very hurt and angry.

Keith D. Jones

I had the first two issues of the original comic book adaptation of Star Wars before seeing the movie. Those issues came out before the movie. The comic book was adapted from the movie's script rather than the finished film. Greedo shot first in the comic. After seeing the movie, I read the novelization of Star Wars, which was also adapted from the script rather than the finished film. Greedo shot first in the novelization. Han shooting first was one of Marcia's edits.

Keith D. Jones

Speaking as one of the moderators of the LEGO star wars subreddit I can safely say that JESUS FUCKING CHRIST WHY DO PEOPLE CALL THEMSELVES FANS OF STAR WARS IF ALL THEY WANNA DO IS BITCH ABOUT IT? The subreddit I run, weve had to add SO MANY words to the automod filter because otherwise people will just come there to bitch about how they hate Star Wars because it's got women in it or because of Jar Jar or whatever. Our automod is like 10,000 lines of filter code because of the sheer volume of bitching toxicity from people who call themselves "Star Wars Fans"

deathbysamurai

Nova's reactions to Star Wars stuff is exactly mine, having seen only ep 1 as a kid & then nothing else

Gilded Dragon

I think we should make them watch rise of Skywalker next time guys

saoirse fitzpatrick

Thank you! I will never get bored of people revisiting the Prequels, they're stuck in my brain and I can't get them out. Luckily for my brain, a few years ago I found a fantastic fan edit of Attack of the Clones by Caleb Gamman that really brought the good bits to the fore - and dare I say made the romance kind of work?! Even if you can't dig up the fan edit itself, he has a good video covering his edits: https://calebgamman.com/fixing-attack-of-the-clones-the-worst-plotting-of-all-time/

sg

Its not cheating to listen to Well Theres Your Problem, its just a Podlycule.

deathbysamurai

Terrible movie, only bit I enjoy is actors saying ‘count dooku’ with a straight face. So when’s KJB doing Showgirls for the bonus? Need a palate cleanser after attack of the clods

Chris

I disagree - most of the acting in this varies between disinterested and dire, there's a lack of energy or urgency or immediacy throughout. The political angle and story make sense, but with politics and dialogue the effects department can't step in to save Lucas from himself like they did with the original trilogy.

William Chamberlain

Just as I was thinking that I'd love you guys to cover the star wars movies I'm blessed with this. I'm so sorry 😂

Melody

If anyone is interested in similar anti rightwing chudhead Huffaz I recommend On Brand for Russell Brand and Louder than Crowder for Steven Crowder

Mark Schwagner

I distinctly remember that one day in middle school, before episode 3 had come out, a teacher made the class watch a clipshow she had made that put together all the forshadowing, all the character beats, all the times the darth vader music creeped into the background, *proving* that anakin was going to turn into darth vader. My 13-year-old ass still did not believe her.

Henry O'Brien

Died a little bit inside when my 40 year old ass was referred to as "the older cohort" ngl

Antichrist Against Fascism

The crew (making the Choker & a 19 yr old observation) in this KJB episode & others (in the comments) figured it out but... If Robot Chicken knocked out 1 segment it was the one from Star Wars Episode III in 2010 (had to look up the deets) called "Non Sexual Matters" Segment Summary. Description (via fandom.com) "Padmé Amidala: Handmaiden, Queen, Senator, and a huge c**ktease." #Truth (finger pointing up emoji)

Mark Schwagner

When I first watched Episode 2 as a 13 year old on the traditional middle school trip to DC, I think I had only watched 1/2 of Episode 1 and random bits of the original trilogy, absorbing the rest through cultural osmosis. So when I first saw Coruscant I legit thought it was the Death Star.

AaronMk91

Haha, glad someone finely said it!

Mark Schwagner

Holy fuck the Black Dynamite bit took me out.

BarFly

The lads from Blank Check theorized that Count Dooku was getting it on freaky-style with Jocasta Nu, which is how he got her to erase Camino from the archives.

BarFly

I finished the episode, pulled my earbud to talk to a colleague, started to put the earbud back in, activated a touch control, and the episode restarted. So I was blasted with a "MEESA BUSTIN'" as the earbud was going into my ear canal. Also, I am officially suggesting Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home as an episode this season, because it is a robbery based film and I think that the part where Sulu definitely dicked a guy down so hard he was able to get helicopter keys off him just needs to be talked about on a larger platform than me pointing it out like Aragorn's broken toe every time I get someone to watch it with me.

Elaine

Me watching Episode 2 at the time: "wait. He falls because he's a whiny baby man and becomes Darth Angst?! That is really uncool and unrealistic!" Me now: "WELP! That idea aged poorly!"

Ingrid Havlik

I think one of the reasons I hate post-prequel Star Wars are the Jedi. They're a group of people with power that makes them superhuman, arguably the pinnacle of whatever species they are- but they often refuse to take action to make things better, get defeated, and then are sad about it. They're like if Superman was a neo-liberal

Noblesse Oblahaj

There's a mouse with Walt Disney's brass hands pointing a Luger at Abby for the entire recording

Noblesse Oblahaj

Yeah, I found that the gap between the prequels and the sequels isn't really in actual film quality, but in terms of worldbuilding that leaves you wanting to hear more stories from those worlds.

Sammi

Holy shit I was not expecting to be sent into a Proustian Rush by Devon(?) humming the DK Eyewitness theme song

THEonlyMAILMAN

With you mentioning the types of seasons you'll be doing in years to come, I'd love for robbery season if you did a kind of Bonnie and Clyde-esque mini season for February, for heists and robberies by couples

shadowcb

That's great! Besides, there is precisely two degrees of separation between you and Knowledge Fight. They've done a couple of crossovers with QAA, which of course Annie Kelly is a member of. And I believe November did an episode of QAA's limited series Perverts. Damn, and Jordan Holmes was on an episode of Lions Led By Donkeys. You all swim in similar waters, pretty much in the same direction.

Hugh Kearney

Isn't space Oppenheimer just Mads Mikkelsons character in Rogue One?

shadowcb

It needs to be paired with a Sneakers and Blackhat episode too

Ineloquent Reverie

There's still time to make a Hackers episode, and there's still time to have a soundboard button which just plays Halcyon and On and On in full

Jørgen Lund

i think the CGI High Tech Fleshlight in THX 1138 directors cut is probably George Lucas' most underrated funny post-hoc addition.

Frejo

That sounds great. I'm gonna check it out

Reminder that George Lucas's then wife Marcia was the one who edited original Star Wars into something watchable. The fact that he wouldn't let anyone do the same for the prequels make them true Divorced Guy movies

Hugh Crosthwait

Devon, Knowledge Fight's conceit is that Dan Friesen listens to an episode of Alex Jones's show Info Wars, and summarizes it for his co-host Jordan Holmes. I wish I could detail how inadequate this description is, but their understanding of Alex Jones and his milieu is so thorough that the lawyers in the Texas Sandy Hook defamation case used Dan as an expert reference.

Hugh Kearney

I have ranted abou how Yoda is the not so secret villain of Star Wars basically ever since Clone Attack first came out. Seriously, he rules the Jedi with an iron fist, using fear and intimidation to keep everyone in line. Yoda is the reason Anikan turned evil because the poor boy didn't know you could turn away from the "dark side." It took his son saying "I sense good in you" or whatever exact wording. It blew Vader's mind.

Keith D. Jones

I will be 55 in 2025, California, USA My podcast player app recommended KJB. I've heard of Spotify but never used it. I loved KJB so much that I became curious enough about a certain YouTube channel to check out Philosophy Tube.

Keith D. Jones

As a 43yo woman [tall, blonde, trans, lesbian, American] who’s been listening since before she was only half those things, I’m happy to round out as many demographic categories as possible! I was so glad to have this to listen to as the clock rolled over on a NYE that I spent prepping brunch in my pajamas [housewife and former patissier]. So excited for the rest of Heist Season!

Furious Brie

Love the tags.

I am actively angry at this entire community for subjecting the hosts to this, we’re dealing with a film we all know front to back, that one of the hosts didn’t want to see and that another host is literally barred from saying anything meaningful on. How dare you

Honestly, I'm desperate to hear your thoughts on Megalopolis. Don't wanna subject you to another dire movie but god, it's just fascinating how it fails in every respect and I'd love to hear your opinions

Rosemary Selth

Anywho real weird that the trade federation and Nute Gunray has an active presence in the galactic senate even after numerous crimes, corruption and an active allegiance to the republic’s enemies such as the CiS. Weirder is that it feels oddly familiar

Mildly invested

Just watched way too much clone wars and clone wars analysis vids that’s all I can say

Mildly invested

also thank you KJB so much for doing this its exactly what i needed, and November, im sure youll be remembered as a martyr for getting through it

C. Riley Hickman

whats the podcast you cant just drop that info and not name the podcast

C. Riley Hickman

reek is the red cow rhino thing, acklay is the mantis thing and the space tiger is called a nexu and iirc has a venemous barb in its tail. also the pachycephalasaurus looking dude is called Coleman Trebor which is legit a name a human person would have and i think thats neat. also plo koon is space dad, thats why everyone knows who he is. strongest dad vibes of all the jedi. also Jocasta Nu and Dooku grew up together and its a running joke on AO3 that he is terrified when she finds out he tampered with her archives.

C. Riley Hickman

what you need is to say more i demand to hear your star wars takes i can already tell i want more of them

C. Riley Hickman

Please don't kill Brian Johnson, he deserves a quiet retirement

Peter Larkin

And a Shmi is my wife to you too KJB!

BayneNothos

As for the actual movie it's interesting to revisit it after the acolyte because the acolyte was making the point (in my opinion) that institutions don't fail just because evil men undermine them but because of generations of systemic failure that are swept under the rug allow bad actors (politically speaking) to manipulate them to their ultimate downfall. Star Wars has always been about the failure of American democracy.

Damien Tonkin

I remember when I was a kid getting a star wars episode I diary for Christmas in 1999, it was a paper diary with the millenium bug because the year was written 19__ Which was very funny. I just thought you might enjoy that as a new year thing.

Damien Tonkin

I loved all of this. I saw this film when I was 15 with my girlfriend at the time. I have a strong memory of joking to her while the sky letters rolled up the screen 'someone better get their hand cut off or I want my money back" Lucas had my back, baby! Also Shmi/her pronouns is my new vocal stim

Doctor of Entomemeology

The thing about the prequels is I think they're actually pretty good as objects to rotate in your mind, it's just that the experience of watching them is, generously, bizarre.

Nathaniel Todd

The drop at the beginning flashbanged me, so we're off to a good start.

Nathaniel Todd

👋 47 years old, from the netherlands (sorry 🫣)

Valesca

This was the movie that made me realize you could make Star Wars boring. Those damn clones should have attacked a lot sooner. Devon's twink sound comparison should be engraved in stone.

Ben Schwabe

As a serious recommend for Robbery Season I think the gang should review "How To Blow Up A Pipeline"(2022). Adapted from the Andreas Malm nonfiction book, it is the only movie I've seen recently to use the grammar of Heist Movie to tell an Anti-Materialist, Anti-Capitalist story.

Crispined Glover Potato Snacks

If anyone is interested in seeing Temuera Morrison at his arguable hottest I recommend watching the 1996 Classic "Barb Wire".

Crispined Glover Potato Snacks

Seriously, can it be that cineaste November has never seen the original trilogy?? I know it's popcorn but it's CLASSIC! And, and... Carrie Fisher! Also, my husband - a big Lions Led By Donkeys/Knowledge Fight/Behind the Bastards fan - is the one who got me into this and WTYP and I'm as grateful for that as when he got me into Battlestar Galactica. 40yo US leftists - we are your demo!!

Lauren Shear

Lucas has the same type of compulsion towards their stories. Lucas, wisely, gave it to the mouse before he went full Jeker

Gilded Dragon

ok things i want to bring up - the separatists are the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) - wat tambor and the techno union as a whole does nazi experiments on aliens and at least one clone -padawans without hair wear a little string beaded thing on their head instead of the rat tail - Missed the “YAAGHH HEE!” Jango Lego noise and the padme crop top Lego noise - for some reason the banking clan aliens remind me of kier starmer - the head Geonosian with the Death Star plans is poggle the lesser -the 6 limbed green beastie is an acklay - they forgot to mention that this is the film that introduced the chad b2 super battle droid and the shot that exists on loop in my brain where a soy b1 gets hit by a blaster shot and the chad b2 just backhands him to the side - anikin is the one that correctly genders zam not sure if I miss heard the pod so I am just going to pad out my autism overload with this - I don’t know why but I got a sudden urge to watch the acolyte or at least certain parts of the show - didn’t even bring up the droidekas smh

Mildly invested

1:29:50 "I do the Steven Jay Gould thing about Einstein, if you gave this anyone else you could have had a much more interesting movie." Here November is paraphrasing Stephen Jay Gould's famous comment, "Einstein sucks, anyone else would have invented the Theory of Relativity better".

August1612

Bless you for this ep! Mom's been in the hospital with complications from her cancer treatment and I've been really down. I laughed so hard during this ep I snorted root beer out of my nose. It did me a world of good to get out of my head and I am so grateful for you all. Happy New Year.

0ctomaton

fuck i can't go through this for 5 mins without having an autistic soyjack moment about something prequel related and its either some stupid niche meme or bit or glup shitto trivia or it's thematic concepts relating to the military industrial complex and how a democracy dies. I need help

Mildly invested

I mean yeah the separatists and clone wars in general is caused by schemes from corporations seeking war profits, oligarchs cementing power, and totalitarian fascists aiming to usurp democracy and to ultimately commit genocide against the jedi and divert social spending funds towards the military industrial complex and the emerging police state.

Mildly invested

"Sith" sounds like onomatopeia for a quiet fart.

Excellent ep, chiming in with my interest for a Hackers ep! Happy new year!

Temuera Morrison does play Jango, but he does not voice the clones in animated things. In TCW at the very least, the clones are voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.

Temura Morrison doesn't actually voice all the animated clones, that's Dee Bradley Baker

As someone with a Star Wars-focused neurodivergencey, I’ve been looking forward to this since I saw the reply on Bluesky

Emilie

This is the only Star Wars thing I have seen and it's only because my roommate wanted to watch it (and I didn't leave the room) but only the Obi Won parts so we just fast forwarded through the romance plot line. So I've now seen 0.5 of a Star Wars movie.

Never in a million years did i think KJB would cover Star Wars, other than mention it in passing comments I follow a separate podcast dedicated just to analyzing the Star Wars franchise from a leftist lens, I wonder if there will be any overlapping critiques btwn this ep and theirs

i am SO hyped. this movie is laser-engraved in my brain. happy new fucking year this will start 2025 with a bang

Incredible

Kids don't want fun adventures with space samurai, they want politics and trade negotiations! This is probably what really caused Brexit

Moray Macdonald

Still a bit sad that we didn't get an episode about Hackers, the film with a subplot of "Angelina Jolie's character wants to forcefem the protagonist"

Sammi

We need a Redletter Media / Kill James Bond collab if only so the hack frauds of Wisconsin can do penance for pretty much only ever having cis white guys on

Happy New Merry, ladies, gentlethings, and non-binary pals! I've been looking forward to this since it was announced last week >.>
