S4E7: Ocean's 8
Added 2025-02-08 10:35:42 +0000 UTC
In the latter half of the 2010s, hollywood invented an idea called 'feminism'. What 'Feminism' consisted of was making new movies from studio-owned IPs, cast of entirely women.
One example of this phenomenon is 'Ocean's 8', a movie about Danny Ocean's sister Debbie Ocean doing a girl heist for girl riches. For some reason we spoke about this for two full hours.

Hey, Devon here. As you well know I've been working with a few gazan families to raise money for their daily living costs in the genocide. As a ceasefire has been announced, we hope soon plenty of Aid can get in and help alleviate the dire famine they're being subjected to. But until then, they still have to afford to eat, so we ask for you to keep helping them out, just a little longer.

I looked up Helena Bonham Carter before listening to the episode to see if she was canceled and found out she's still supporting Depp and Rowling (and implied the main cast of HP only support trans rights lest their fans cancel them) so I was like Oh ok that explains it and then listened and found out they just don't like her lol

some considerations on the SCUM score: Cultural Insensitivity-the white women all debate if they can force the black woman to deadname herself Unprovoked violence-Sandra Bullock holds a ahiv to the guy while threatening him, amd a major part of the heist is poisoning a woman. Misogyny-For all the film loves to insist on "only women", the actual heist is pulled off by one man.

So in the jazz outro at the end of this one, Devon mentions Shrek (2001) as an example of a movie that has to be about being trans because it came out before 9/11. And I think they mean it as a joke, but Shrek is 100% a movie about being trans. Like, you know the bit near the end of the movie where Fiona vents her internalized ogrephobia to Donkey, but she's still closeted so Shrek thinks she's talking about him? Or how Fiona spends most of the movie struggling to perform normative non-ogre behavior but eventually relaxes into doing more and more ogre stuff once she feels safe to do so around Shrek who is very unapologetically an ogre? Or how Shrek's struggle to connect with other people is rooted in his very rational belief that "it's the world that seems to have a problem with me"?

Regarding the met gala I've been researching the history of chess for a couple of years and about half of the important artifacts are in the met museum, the other half are in the British museum, the national museum of Scotland has a few that the British museum forgot to take (no literally) and the oldest chess set ever found are in a little museum in Uzbekistan. Oh wait they've just been moved to the British Museum. It's a tiny snapshot of how world history is commodified but I think it's pretty representative.

It did feel like the movie twisted itself into knots to have the shots of the gang walking down the steps in eveningwear and fancy jewels, and then the crown jewels twist renders that whole scene moot anyway since the whole plot it had been trying to get us invested in was just a small-scale distraction from the actual, boring heist.

Something I've not seen mentioned is that they reuse the music from the Gilroy sex-pheromone scene in Ocean's 13 in this film. It plays when they're getting into the Met Gala and really showing off the opulence of the place, which is... A weird parallel, accidental or otherwise?

An actually good introductory sequence of a character fresh out of prison running small retail cons (credit card fraud, pawn shop laundering) to build up some seed money is contained in the The first Parker novel The Hunter, and is really well portrayed in the otherwise lackluster film adaptation Payback. (The Hunter was fantastically adapted as Point Blank but that version does not contain the opening scams)

Dev's comment about how casually you can depict a former Mossad guy as a complete psycho during this time reminded me of the one season and done Sacha Baron Cohen show Who is America, which also came out in 2018, where he's basically doing Ali G but with a whole bunch of characters. One of them is an incredibly over the top depiction of an israeli man called Erran Morrad, who is former Mossad officer and who is just a complete gleeful psychopath, an utter sadist.
I can't decide if it aged extremely well or extremely poorly but it's really fucking weird he did that.

So homosocial behavior is a thing assigned to cishet dudes more than the ladies because traditional western femme relationships already cover a lot of ground that is nominally taboo in masc ones - they can hold hands, cuddle, wear each others clothes, refer to their girlfriends and the like in a nonromantic way that your... traditional western baseline? (I lack some vocab here) doesn't encourage in cishet men. So homosocial usually refers to not just interacting with those of your own gender, but in a way that is more... intimate than one might expect. Barriers go down because some goalposts are moved because of... idk, whatever.

It's wild that this movie exists because of a Tumblr post about Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o looking like heist characters at Cannes in 2014. The caption was "They look like they’re in a heist movie with Rihanna as the tough-as-nails leader/master thief and Lupita as the genius computer hacker,” and they couldn't even follow that solid gold blueprint!

It's funny that Abigail's guess of how American might mispronounce Cartier is to pronounce it correctly, with an American accent. I think an American would mispronounce it by pronouncing the r at the end of the word. Car-tee-yer. Also Abi is saying Mindy KuhLING and now I'm wondering if KAYling is wrong
Speaking of the Mossad thing, in the Ender's Game novel, one of the kids tells him that the military leaders of Earth always try to scout Israeli children because of their innate elite level of military strategy. The actress who plays the Mossad agent in NCIS is from Chile
