S4E8: Dog Day Afternoon

This week on the free feed, we're getting into not only a titan of Heist cinema, but a titan of early Al Pacino. You can imagine which of us was practically chewing the bars of their cell waiting to get to this one.

Dog Day Afternoon is the true-ish story of a pair of men who held up a New York City bank in 1972, and every single thing that could have gone wrong went wrong. Joining us is friend of the show and all three hosts, Mattie Lubchansky!

Hey, Devon here. As you well know I've been working with a few gazan families to raise money for their daily living costs in the genocide. As a ceasefire has been announced, we hope soon plenty of Aid can get in and help alleviate the dire famine they're being subjected to. But until then, they still have to afford to eat, so we ask for you to keep helping them out, just a little longer.

It's funny because the case that prompted the coining of the term "Stockholm Syndrome" WAS a bank robbery hostage situation, and the term was apologia for the cops really mismanaging the negotiation, to explain why the hostages sided with the thieves who didn't want to hurt them

Felixir of Life

FUN FACT for an australian trans man having phalloplasty: $100k out of pocket for surgical fees alone, you get maaayybe 20k back from medicare/private insurance. 😭 can you post gofundme links in comments? 😭

Jay Galbraith

This makes me think y'all would like The Terrorism and Kebab, an Egyptian movie about a man who accidentally holds people at the Mogamma hostage after being lead around all day by corrupt officials. I'm not sure if it counts as a heist movie exactly, but dog day afternoon felt pretty similar in its themes.

KJB Season 4: Al Pacino

Trevor Gilmore

I didn't really get dinging it a point for angry Puerto Ricans. Was that just about the boyfriend or also some crowd shot they didn't like? From the 'hivemind' comment I assume it was about an angry Puerto Rican crowd - well, this is a hot summer in the 70s! Just went and looked at an interactive map of Puerto Rican urban unrest and the very first pin I clicked was cops in 1975 getting chased out of Harlem by a bottle throwing crowd after arresting a hostage-taker.

Robert Jacobsen

Oh, I didn't know about this movie but I knew the story from a tumblr post that lied and described it as a wonderful guy who robbed a bank to pay for a sex change op for his trans gf and didn't mention any of the abuse

Oh No

The year is 1971. Nixon is master of Europe. Banks are now battlefields!

Allana Langen

I genuinely think that while it could have been handled better the film views the gay community as normal good people whose movements are valid.

Maxwell Smith

https://boxd.it/4OIhYH I gift you all Cole Netscape’s wonderful Letterboxd review of this film

Ineloquent Reverie

Fun fact about the "beautifully written" phone call between Sonny and Leon - not written! Two cishet men in the 70s *improvised* that phone call! The Attica chant and the "Wyoming" line were also *improvised* (the former with the AD's prompting)! Actors are smart as hell sometimes

Nah

It took me a minute, but it hit me that Leon is Prince Humperdink.

William Cahill

Sincere thanks!

Christopher Barnes

To do some critical analysis of my own, I enjoy including Abby's comment earlier about people talking over each other like a poorly edited podcast, and then at the end leaving in her walking all over Maddie's punchline

Kristaps Porzingis

My pussy cost the insurance company a bit north of 80k, but was free to me because i had already hit the the out of pocket that year

Vivian Scott

Not to be that person, but technically the first two Bourne movies were scored on GIRTH not SCUM so they shouldn't really be in the rankings (also would be in favor of them getting SCUMed at some point)

Alma Blue

Great review. I enjoyed that. I wounder if the 1969 Italian Job will appear in the Heist Season and how it will score. Might raise interesting comments.

Jennifer Houghton

I have a friend who used to work as a bank teller until he got robbed at gunpoint and had to change careers entirely

Chad Countiss

I'm going to be honest, for however old fashioned or outdated the exact phrasing or way of thinking may be, the end of this film made me quite sad about the state of things today. The fact that a mainstream film came out 50 years ago, literally half a century ago, and ended with a blunt "She is now a woman" without being a statement piece made me have to get up and pace around a bit.

Sammi

Oh, shit, this is before the Son of Sam law, because otherwise the guy who did it wouldn’t have made any money off of it

Jermy

Or even that he was a would be copycat, or just seeking to take credit for it. There's a LOT of doubt around who actually murdered that CEO

deathbysamurai

Some context for why the FBI might show up so quickly: they have jurisdiction over bank robberies and kidnappings, and I think a huge field office in NYC

Jermy

Speaking of Italians justifying things: in The Godfather novel, Michael's sister Connie is being beaten by her husband, and when she goes to her parents (one of those being *the Godfather*, they look at her bemusedly and tell her that she must deserve it and if she was a better wife, she wouldn't be beaten Coffee: in the 007 novels, James Bond insists on coffee in the MI6 offices, presumably something he got from fighting alongside Americans

Andrew Dunn

I really don't want to be a buzzkill, but it does bother me that they mention Luigi Mangione and the Claims Adjuster as if they were the same person. We Don't Know That. Not just in a "haha he was playing warframe with me that night" joke way either, there is very little actual evidence linking him to the killing. The arrest makes little sense once you look into the details. There is avery real chance Luigi is being framed for the killing because they couldn't find the actual assassin.

Prince Jade

+1 for Bandits

Jacob King

Not a criticism, but Stockholm Syndrome is not real. The discussion covered why hostages wouldn’t want armed police intervening in their situation in pretty much the exact terms a Swedish bank teller would have used in 1973.

Jacob King

It's thunderball with no notes, Abi's flawless Starmer impression

Matt

followup to this: Bandits (2001) for how it depicts polyamory. here i think there was something to be examined in the phone call scene, how gentle he is with one wife who calls out his abuse and then he screams and hangs up at his wife who makes excuses for him. there's a curious deliberate asymmetry but the past is a foreign country i don't get the 70s context.

Bones

give me as much jazz as possible

Nettle

Abi: My pussy only cost me $800. I have an excellent healthcare plan and I live in DC where insurers have to provide trans care by law. Orgasms are fantastic and my minge is beautiful. Five Stars, would recommend.

Louise Duke

Real question do you like the endings where it fades out as soon as im done or where the song finishes

Its Devon Babeyyy

John Cazale was only in five movies before dying from cancer, and all of them are stone-cold classics. This. The Conversation. The Deer Hunter. Fucking GODFATHER 1 and 2. And he was lovers with Meryl Streep. The man was a true legend.

Brian Taulbee

Re-editing baby driver to replace all the music with episodes of this podcast

theunderwolf

Dog Day Afternoon and The Wickerman were my two most anticipated episodes for them to cover. And now they’re released back to back?

Jay Ghoul

The 'based' chorus around 50:39 soundin like the pelicans in Finding Nemo up in here, I love it

cole d

Ok I looked long and hard for the intro where Abby makes Devon do an actual spit take (you know the one) but I can't find it. Any help?

Christopher Barnes

I work in a factory with my OSHA approved ear buds and I get weird looks sometimes when I laugh but it's generally very chill

Lenny

listened to this when it came out have hearing Devon whisper [REDACTED] just as I started to fall asleep was terrifying

Nettle

The straight crowd: "Well I was with him until he made the bank robbery political"

Noblesse Oblahaj

I'd rather see the crowd do the people's elbow to the NYPD

Noblesse Oblahaj

oh fuck South Wales Police now and always (incidentally this episode gave me the final push to sign up to my local acorn branch)

Nettle

I don't know if I'm getting coded messages from Devon, but every time I listen to a podcast they're on I hear their voice telling me to [REDACTED]

BarFly

Its really funny that we know exactly who Dev is talking about when they were talking about “remember gun?”

Skate Bush

God I do love to see Charles Durning. The way he Durns all over everybody.

BarFly

I generate spreadsheets....if I didn't have podcasts....it would be bad.

D&BDomeisen

Oh I have been WAITING for this one :D Interesting thing to note about the Let Me Die A Woman doc that Mattie mentioned as well, the vaginoplasty footage that was filmed for that was used in a 2005 episode of South Park where Mr Garrison (briefly) transitions. They used it specifically to jumpscare the audience with SUDDEN GRAPHIC MEDICAL FOOTAGE, and frame The Surgery as being inherently gross and horrible. Honestly it probably single-handedly pushed me out of actually bothering to seriously interrogate my own gender for a good decade.

Dot Maetrix

There's a Drunk History episode on the true story behind the movie

Andrew Dunn

Looking at the power of the Woke Mob, people might wonder why the transgender marxists haven’t conquered the world. A trans woman's first answer to this would be, “Haven’t we?”

Khris

Oh! It's bc it's in the caniculae!

Gilded Dragon

wait this movie is why when there's a crowd scene in a movie on mystery science theater the riffers will start yelling "attica! attica!"???

God's Eepiest Soldier

Three minutes in and November is trying to set up her ADN bit, but instead Abbie returns it with such power and skill, that I have to pause the podcast while I laugh.

MFH

Had a horrible realization halfway through the episode that the reason the plot sounds so familiar despite having never seen this movie is because there’s an early season Supernatural episode that riffs it almost beat for beat and adds in a shapeshifter. Soul went directly to hell

Rune

Speaking of Charles Durning, I hope you do The Sting during Heist Season. I know it's technically about a con rather than a heist, but pleeease?

Buckeroo

To answer Abbie's question about cost, I live in Canada so my vaginoplasty was covered by the government, but out of pocket it would have been around $25-30k, including flights, the surgery itself, supplies, and the weeklong stay in their recovery facility after.

TheDollHouse

I too listen to this podcast at work. But I clean operating rooms after hours so there isn't really anyone else around to interrupt the pod

AaronMk91

eagerly awaiting for this one hey
