S4E8.5: Devil's Advocate
Added 2025-02-28 21:37:57 +0000 UTC
It's Abi's bonus pick this week and we're sticking with the religious theme as we discuss the 1997 Keanu Reeves/Al Pacino movie Devil's Advocate. A slick floridian lawyer gets everything he ever wished for when a big New York firm scouts him- but what if that sucked actually?
Joining us to talk about this is returning champion A.J. from The Worst of All Possible Worlds! https://www.worstpossible.world/

Hey, Devon here. As you well know I've been working with a few gazan families to raise money for their daily living costs in the genocide. As a ceasefire has been announced, we hope soon plenty of Aid can get in and help alleviate the dire famine they're being subjected to. But until then, they still have to afford to eat, so we ask for you to keep helping them out, just a little longer.

I grew up in Gator Country so I can confirm. Further one's accent in FL was determined by one's parents. I still speak like my NY parents but anyone in Gainesville that had southern parents did talk like that. Also I happen to know many people who were pregnant in Gainesville. They did say it kinda sucked. lol

Floridian here, I want to weigh in real quick about the Gainesville southern accent thing, but yes, many people in North Central Florida do speak with a southern accent. (Well, at least they used to before the internet started completely destroying regional dialects in the southern US but that's a different conversation.)

I loved this movie as a teen, and was worried it wouldn’t hold up in my thirties, but man was I wrong. I rewatched it last night after the podcast and god fucking damn they really do not make em like this anymore.
I was smiling ear to ear for the entire final showdown, watching Al Pacino act like a total fucking goofball. He truly is a national treasure
I probably would have hated this movie 5 years ago, but the bad CGI, weird pacing/editing, and general hamminess of the movie is super endearing to me now

I’ve never been more glad I trusted my instincts to shut off the episode in the first few minutes to go away and watch the movie first. What a fucking ride. They quite literally do not make em like this anymore

well Phoenix Wright also has a magic rock that tells you if someone is lying for most of his career. so i think what Keanu Reeves did is more impressive

I have a feeling Abigail would of made a great lawyer. I am told acting techniques are quite valuable to barristers in emphasising points to juries. But the world for lots of people is far more colourful because of her chosen path.

This makes me want to revisit my idea for a slice of life comic about The Wh*re of Babylon. The idea is that she was supposed to corrupt the great leaders of the world to prepare for Armageddon but they're all already so corrupt without any help that she has a lot of downtime and is just kind of vibing.

I didn't notice that but I did notice that he went into lawyer mode with the way he started talking about Milton being "in his presence" which also has a kind of biblical ring to it I guess so it works on a few levels but it's not how normal people talk.

I don't think "abogado del diablo" was a very common phrase in Mexico when I was growing up so whenever I saw the term "playing devil's advocate" the movie's poster was the first thing I thought about.

The whole "sixty straight wins until you actually have to defend a guilty person" is hilariously also how it goes in the original Ace Attorney trilogy. Phoenix Wright has an absolutely flawless track record until he has to defend an actual murderer, and there he manages to contrive a situation where the guy either goes to prison or gets assassinated so that the defendant confesses right before the judge gives a not guilty verdict

Also fun facts!
This project was stalled in pre-production until the OJ Simpson trial. Suddenly producers were into a movie about satanic lawyers!
Keanu Reeves took a pay cut so that they could afford Al Pacino.
That nine-circles-of-subway version of the script had Brad Pitt in the lead role. John Cusack and Edward Norton were both considered.
Al Pacino turned the script down *five times* before it became a version he liked. At one point he told the studio to offer it to Sean Connery.

Tbh I always thought that the final scene isn't a time reset, Kevin had precognition of how events would go
In the jury selection scene, he doesn't just show preternatural insight, what he identified in each juror are the sins they harbor in their hearts (pride, wrath, etc) and what they'd do with it
In the bathroom he was close to Satan (in disguise) and he was pondering the right thing to do. In that moment, probably the most introspective of his adult life, he looked into *himself* and saw a vision of what would happen if he gave in to pride

A small detail I noticed in the church scene is that there is a bite mark on the back of Charlize Theron’s shoulder that literally would’ve had to have been done by someone else, and yet because Keanu’s character has lawyer brain her statements are enough evidence to him that she is crazy that he doesn’t even try to trust her.

fascinated by the cosmological genetics of this movie. like i wonder if pacinos logic was like “well they’re both 50% satan, so by a basic punit square there’s a 25% chance their kid is 100% satan” and that’s all he needs for an antichrist. just someone else who is also satan.

In Truman Show, one of the first signs that True man realizes he's in a Garden of Eden soundstage (and was put there by Christ of) is when a star falls from the sky, in the morning. That's especially fun because two scenes of that movie were filmed in my hometown, on literally the roads that I drove to school and work on, and I was raised sheltered, in a Christian cult, by family who knew the cult wasn't real. So you have no idea how cathartic Truman Show was for me
This movie, and the Jack Reacher book / show Kiling Floor, both make them same mistake about the American south of saying "a black person? In the south?!" when, like... That's where the black people live.
The Jack Reacher novels Killing Floor AKA Reacher season 1, has a black detective who is stuck in Georgia and yearns to get back to Boston. Because British author Lee Child is thinking "North vs South" and not "Black capital of the US vs notoriously racist Boston". Child also writes Arkansas hillbillies saying "taking the mick" and talks about "kerbs"
My Cousin Vinny is one of the most accurate, respectful portrayals of the South I've ever seen, and you'll notice that about half of the background characters are black people. Because it takes place in Alabama, where black people live.
Everyone please watch Andor, it is one of the most powerful, well acted pieces of anti imperialism and anti prison pieces of fiction I've ever seen

I saw this movie in Tallahassee when it was first premiered. For those that don't know, Tallahassee is the home of Florida State University. FSU's arch rival is The University of Florida, which is located in Gainesville. So when Charlize Theron wails, "I don't wanna go back to Gainesville!" it got a great big laugh.
That's what I most remember about this movie, other than Al Pachino dialing it up to eleven.
