2025-11-18 04:50:24 +0000 UTCTwo weeks late bc I did stop until I watched the film for myself BUT on the topic of the homosexual themes: if we assume the crew were real, I'd like to make an argument that Fenster and McManus were textually gay. Mostly small things, like Fenster saying in the police lockup he had a finger up his ass and making jokes about seeing someone else's dad. But also McManus' very sentimental insistence that they bury Fenster with their own hands, that Fenster was "his partner for five years" (probably not how that word was intended in the nineties, but it colors my reading nonetheless), the fact that to my knowledge he was the only one who didn't crack a gay joke at Fenster OR push back about the "honeymoon in California." That being said, I don't think this is impactful on the SCUM score, and might even complicate it if the read-as-textual gay guys are the foppish one and the guy in a racist hat.

And then at the end he gets away, but now there's a whole police station who knows what he looks like. So it doesn't seem like he's really gained anything out of all of this.

Jesus h fuck Abigail straight up tried to take points off because you’re supposed to enjoy the action in this crime movie. I am starting to think that perhaps the scum system is not all that scientific, and may be, in fact, a borderline value-neutral joke number that pertains little if at all to a film’s quality.
