S4E25.5: Judgement at Nuremberg

We return once more to the Brains Dojo to talk about Abby Mann and Stanley Kramer's 1961 dramatisation of the Nuremberg trials.

The year is 1947. Hitler, Goebbels, and the top brass are all dead. The trials have been going on for two years, and now we're down to the business of judging lawyers, doctors and judges. How much did they know, and when? Who bears ultimate responsibility for the crimes of the Third Reich?

FREE PALESTINE

Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.

-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla

-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patches

S4E25.5: Judgement at Nuremberg

Comments

Oh hey, the judge guy is the lawyer guy from Inherit the Wind ! Y'all would love Inherit the Wind, too ! (it'd be part of the secret 4th pannel of Religion Season : militant Abi-style atheism !)

Kobal Deux

I paused the podcast when first told to go watch the movie, then procrastinated, then finally watched it yesterday. Having done this, I wholeheartedly agree with the instruction! Also, UK-based listeners: it's currently available on BBC iPlayer for the next 24ish days www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001qp0w

The Token Detergent Rinser (British)

i've relistened to this episode a few times now b/c this movie & your discussion of it makes me feel less insane (though no less angry) about witnessing the collapse (& capitulation) of liberalism, the resurrection of fascism, & the multiple genocides (& denial of genocides) going on around the world. honestly i think you should consider putting this episode out on the free feed b/c this kind of art & criticism feels fucking vital right now & y'all're firing on all cylinders here.

PLEASE do Andrei Tarkovsky’s The Sacrifice (1986) before you conclude Religion Season. There is A LOT going on there. A great companion piece to Andrei Rublev

Jae H

& in 1961 there were still JIM CROW LAWS & in 2025 indigenous people in the USA remain subordinate to greater state violence

Gil the Gilded Dragon

Was gonna say, they need to do Bad Day at Black Rock next. One of the first films to recognize the internment of Japanese-Americans during the Second World War as a bad thing, and features a scene where a one-armed Spencer Tracy does Judo on Ernest Borgnine.

Spencer Tracy comes to town after WWII and forces the locals to confront their horrific actions during the war? You mean Bad Day at Black Rock?
