There are shoots that you can feel straight away that you have some magic happening. The dynamic between you and the model is amazing, what you're seeing on the back of the camera is looking good and ideas are going to plan, sometimes it's just a feeling.
Then there are other shoots that are just really hard work. Lucas is a model I've worked with 5 times now and this particular time was a shoot I think we'd both rather forget. Because I wanted to have ropes draping from the roof, I needed a studio space that had somewhere to rig it from and through my circus connections some friends had a space they lived/worked in that was ideal. It had rigging points that were safe, lots of room to work in and they had no problem with a nude man dangling from their ceiling.
On the day of the shoot Sydney was experiencing one of the hottest days of the year and the space was in a warehouse space with a tin roof and no air conditioning so it was about 45 degrees celsius in there (113F). Add to that the ropes weren't really conducive to essentially tying someone up and it meant a VERY uncomfortable shoot for Lucas. I didn't actually ask him to get off the ground and into the air on the ropes but he's a performer, dancer and recognised that it would be better. By the end of the shoot the poor guy had rope burns all over his torso.
In the end some of the shots are ok but I wouldn't rave about any of them which is a real shame since we both worked hard and pushed through such a tough shoot.
