Added 2023-08-29 08:30:08 +0000 UTCWith my exhibition a matter of weeks away, last weekend I thought I'd go and reacquaint myself with the gallery I'm exhibiting in as I don't think I'd been in there since I booked it. Talking to the woman who runs the gallery, we realised that she hadn't seen any of my work. After showing her my images on my phone she was really impressed and said that she thinks I should start trying for gallery representation.
The two previous times I'd had a gallery show and again this time, I've used spaces that are for hire. Getting represented by a gallery means I'd be contracted to them and any shows I have through them would be promoted by them and also the gallery invites all their art buying contacts. That means they take a much higher commission but also get much better prices for them.
Gallery representation is a very nice thought but I do have concerns about some of the contracts I've heard of. If a gallery wanted to represent me and put me on their books but their contract was too limiting or didn't feel right, then I would not sign it. I think it's time to do some research.
