The story behind Freedom

My first exhibition was moody, black and white and in a studio. When I decided to do another exhibition I think I was feeling in a more optimistic mood. Where the first exhibition had dealt with my insecurities, this one intentionally felt like looking towards a brighter future.

Calling it FREEDOM and shooting outdoors felt like a good, logical counterpoint to what had come before but showcasing the kind of work I started doing when I took up photography. Like most people I started outdoors in natural light because I didn't have access to a studio and being mostly self-taught, a studio was very daunting.

For this exhibition I photographed friends (as I still do), people I knew through the circus school I was attending and other networking opportunities. Shooting outdoors is always fraught with the risk of weather problems but these shoots were quite lucky. Some of the models might not agree. Rick was shot in the very early days of our spring but he promised it was ok to go in the freezing cold lagoon for some shots even though those images didn't make the final selection.

Due to a pretty serious injury I sustained doing my circus classes, one shoot with three friends in a waterhole had to be pushed back til after surgery and when I was allowed to drive and pick up a camera, meaning it was shot in Autumn and not particularly warm. One of those models (and good friend) is actually back in this new exhibition coming up in October and his shots were also both in water again.
