I'm the first to admit that most of my shoots, especially the studio shoots are born out of an idea that is purely an exploration of something I think will look good. Rarely do I start with a deep meaningful concept that I find a visual way to represent. That does happen occasionally but it's not my general idea.
Wired started with a memory. My favourite photographer of all time, Australian James Houston took a photo that is in one of his books that I own and a model with an incredible physique was standing holding big loops of wire that circle his nude figure like planets in a solar system and that was my reference point.
Of course with no research or real planning I just took myself off to our big hardware chain store and got a few different options on wire. They were vastly thinner than the shot in my head and ultimately what I ended up with was a wildly different shoot. The wire that I had stayed fairly tightly curled and tangled at the slightest touch so like with all technical disasters, you lean in to it and see what you can come up with.
Ultimately Aaron had the patience of a saint and a fantastic attitude, letting me put a mess of wire over his head and in his face and I really quite like where we ended up with this series. He can't have hated it too much as we have gone on to do at least three more shoots together.
