Last night I couldn't find a movie or series I was in the mood to watch and I ended up deep diving back through a YouTube channel that I subscribe to. It's the channel of Capetown based artist Jono Dry. He does hyperrealistic pencil drawings with wildly surrealistic figures.
In the aftermath of my own exhibition I'm trying to find ways to challenge and push myself creatively and watching Jono's videos last night was really inspiring. He often uses himself as his model because, as he says in one of his videos, he feels really bad putting models through some of the uncomfortable situations to get the reference photos he works from.
For a very long time I've taken pride in the fact that my shoots are fairly simple, fast and fun for my models and that is something I will always strive for but it's time to really step up my creative process. Who knows what form that will take but I have some ideas.
In the mean time I will dream of the day when I can afford one of Jono's originals. Having a sneaky look last night, he sells his original drawings which take months and are very large, for close to €40,000 so that is a very long way off.
