The story of Splash

Less than a year after our first collaboration, Aaron was back in town and keen to do another shoot. This time rather than get us lost in the National Park I took us over to Washaway Beach on the north side of Sydney Harbour.

As it's name suggests, it isn't actually there all the time. Some summers there is no sand and some there is. At high tide there is no beach and at low tide there should be, but it's not guaranteed.

After collecting Aaron we drove over and found our way along the relatively hidden path to the beach. I've done a few shoots over there now and I still never know what to expect. Thank goodness for overcast mornings though as the beach faces directly east and on a sunny morning the lighting would be VERY harsh.

Because of the tide and lack of beach we were confined to the rocks and I got the name of the download., SPLASH from the moment when Aaron was thoroughly wet by a wave hitting the rocks and splashing all over him. Thankfully Aaron is a great sport and made the most of it.

I chose a fairly neutral colour grade for these images. As you can see in the later shoot WASHAWAY with Jim, the rocks are actually very saturated in colour but for this occasion the overcast sky and the mood I must have been in when editing them lent themselves to a more muted palette.
