Defining shy...

There was a comment on my post about Dane yesterday that said "Such an handsome man so shy? Can't understand." Believe me, I have had the same thought about some of the guys that have said no to a shoot because they don't feel confident enough. I was having a conversation today with a friend about this. Some of the most beautiful men I've known and photographed have been the most insecure.

In my experience there are two reasons for shyness. The first we've already covered. Everyone's journey with their body is unique. I've heard so many people say they have come to love their aging body but I am not at that point. I'm still mourning the loss of the body I had before but still didn't appreciate.

The second reason for shyness is a more practical one. Some people just don't want photos of their junk out in the world for people to see. Everyone's comfort levels with nudity are different to begin with and then there are factors like jobs, family and friends to consider. I'm sure my friends are all sick of seeing me in my glory but other people would never let anyone see them nude.

My models all set their own boundaries and I work within those boundaries because as I've said before, I love when a model comes back for another shoot or says how much fun they had.

Whilst it is nice to see all, I do feel that what models have between their legs is not a mystery, Modelling for a photographer is not an easy job, especially if they expect you to go further than you are comfortable with. For me full nudity is not a problem, but for some it is asking too much, the fact that you do not want to show your family jewellery is not a matter of being shy, it is a matter of trust and confidence. Expecting a model to do something they are not comfortable may make the shoot awkward or even the model cancel. Plus, these days with everything online following you around on the internet, models may think it could damage their future prospects. We should be thankful for what a model is prepared to do, as a photographer it takes a long time to build a reputation but minutes to ruin. I would rather be a relaxed model than a frightend one.

Thanks Brenton for your comprehensive answer, but I like your models at ease in their full frontal and there are so many!
