There have been times when I've been accused of being part of the problem of body image etc. I long ago gave up any notion of trying to please everyone. Most of my models are not professional models and a decent percentage have never done a professional shoot, especially nude and in my view while most of them are quite athletic and fit, they do represent regular guys, albeit beautiful guys.
One thing I am keen on is diversity and representation. Sadly I have only managed to photograph one trans man for my own work, Rhett. He and I met about 5 years ago now and at some point he agreed to be a part of my "In My Bed" series.
It's always my focus for models to feel relaxed and comfortable on a shoot. Posing nude for the first time, or any time is a vulnerable experience. That is even more heightened as a trans person who has likely felt very at odds with their body at some point and even living as their authentic self, being nude in front of a camera is a big thing.
Thankfully Rhett was comfortable and despite nerves, did a great job. I believe that even though beds are personal and an intimate space, they are a familiar and comfortable space, even when it's not your own bed. Rhett could keep his modest using pillows or the quilt and the bedroom we were shooting in was a light-filled, cosy space.
Now I just need to find more gorgeous trans men to work with. To check out the full series, click here.
