It's the morning after the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and while I didn't participate this year in any meaningful way, it's a hugely important cultural and political event. Sure, a lot of the floats in the parade are seemingly unrelated to the original meaning of the parade and far too many are just corporate rainbow washing but nevertheless it is important.
Back in 2016 I was asked to be part of a photographic community project where I gave five days of my time and skill to photograph nude portraits of LGBTIQA+ people. It was a huge pleasure to be able to get the trust of the models who were very vulnerable and nervous, to get some beautiful images of them.
A few months later the project was chosen to become the face of the Mardi Gras parade in 2017, again something that I'm very proud of.
Sadly I can only share a handful of images here of people I am friends with and know well because the owner of the project asked me to sign over all the rights to the images which I now regret. It's a shame that one project can be simultaneously something to be very proud of and something I almost regret doing.
