Over the years that I've been photographing nude men, I have learnt that if you are discreet, fast and don't push your luck too much, you can get away with doing shoots in a lot more places than you'd expect.
There is a very popular picnic and swimming spot in the Royal National Park about 40 minutes south of Sydney where I have managed to do a few shoots over the years. So when I planned this shoot with Andrew I thought we'd get away with it easily.
The thing about National Parks here in Australia is that you can only camp in designated camping areas, and this isn't one of them, so it was a surprise to turn up and see a tent in the middle of the grove of trees I wanted to shoot in. It was still quite early and there was no sign of activity from the people in the tent so we moved far enough away that we wouldn't wake them and did some shoots.
The lagoon area where people swim was looking beautiful and still and I was JUST about to send my nude model in there for some shots when two families turned up to get started on what was clearly going to be a long day of cooking and eating. Think middle eastern and probably muslim judging by the headscarves the women were in. It was pretty sure they weren't going to appreciate a nude man in their morning so we turned around and waded up stream and around the bend do do more shots out of their view.
Andrew is a really lean, lanky model and some would say not my usual choice but he was great to work with. This was nine years ago and I was surprised at how readily he went full frontal too. We did keep it pretty discreet though.
