okay wait i totally glossed over the first thing you said the first time I read this.... CONGRATS ON GRADUATING!!!!🫶🏻🎓

I was busy ✨graduating✨ this month, so I didn’t get to read as much of this as I would have liked before the deadline. I got through the first batch of essay’s and started the second by last night. But from the moment I read the synopsis I knew I would like this very much. It’s the perfect mix of music culture commentary, and wonderfully intertwines politics and race. It’s very much a product of its time, but still remains very relevant to the last two years. I think a lot of people have problems with the way he uses race, and readers either feel like he is blaming white people or victimizing black people. But, I found his perspective giving me the ability to reflect on the very fact that me not having to think about my race everyday or within the scope of popular culture is in itself a privilege. The descriptive writing is some of the best I’ve read in a long time, and he really makes you feel like you are experiencing these very popular artists, their work, and their most iconic moments for the first time. The author provides a completely recontextualized version of them, that even if you are familiar with what he’s saying, it still feels new. I will be finishing it within the week, after the first round of essay’s I can honestly say I’m hooked! (I'm especially excited for the infamous MCR essays) Wonderful pick and I can't wait for Trust after the succession finale 😭

i really liked this, i listened on audiobook and i think that was the best way to consume this. i actually found it similar to gathering moss in that although the topic of the essays was music (or moss), it was more how that related to the authors life and circumstance at the time, and the music becomes secondary as we hear how that affected abdurraqib. i particularly found his thoughts on love and heartbreak relatable (lol) and it felt so personal, emotional and intimate that he was telling us about this. at times it really felt like a conversation the writing was gorgeous too, it’s clear that he is primarily a poet. this quote in particular fucking ruined me for a bit ‘I am telling you all of this to let you know that I, too, want to feel the heat with somebody or, at worst, I want to be a child of the heat's eager production, the smoke that rises & dances thick in the air, a ghost over those who labor in our names & then become the ghosts themselves & it's a shame our wings don't arrive until after we've already raced off the cliff & met whatever waits below & it's a shame to still have living hands & barely anything left worthy of touch’ yea i really liked this. i did feel that towards the last third of the book it started to drag but the first half was serene. i was surprised to see smaller bands i’ve listened to such as the wonder years listed here lmao, but yea… a really good book, thanks leader shawn
