2023-08-13 23:45:35 +0000 UTCI was surprised this was July's pick, mostly because I thought no one was interested in the troubles outside Ireland and Britain. I am from Scotland, not Ireland, but everything about the IRA and loyalists is still VERY topical where I live (due to mass immigration from Irish people). The Good Friday agreement calmed the conflict but is still culturally embedded in Irish and British society. I still hear rebel songs, I see orange walks every year, and I hear "fuck the Pope" or "fuck the Queen" daily. It's still a period in which people mourn and/or pride, no matter the side. I knew much about what this book discussed, with each person's name and stories. PRK was great at making this an intriguing story since most of the history of the troubles is either isolated or hard to piece together. He took a topic infamously cherry-picked by Republicans and loyalists alike and made it one big perspective. I loved how the writing felt like reading an ancient epic tale at some points, as this is how many people view the provos and the army. And PRK does this not to uphold either side but to make it a reminder that history repeats itself and that more innocent lives than intended were lost. Brilliant stuff. Cheers for the pick!
