I read this either my Sophomore or Junior year of high school. I remember Milkman and Hagar’s relationship being such a jaw dropper lmao. Class reading was usually so boring but I was so hooked by all the dialogue, drama, and mystery. To my surprise, I ended it feeling very sad and also very seen. I cried so much. I think generational trauma effects us all in different ways. As an African American (I’m sure other people of other races and ethnicities can relate as well) knowing more about the history of my family has always been something I’ve wanted. Milkman doing that was so emotional for me. The way Toni Morrison told such a heartbreaking story but somehow ended it in such an optimistic way, just amazes me. I appreciate her being able to mix humor in with the pain and sorrow. My favorite part was her symbolism of flight. “You wanna fly, you got to give up the sh*t that weighs you down.” Lastly, I loved the characters. Pilate was my favorite which makes the end so heartbreaking for me. Her characters are always so colorful down to their names. It’s just so so good! I also really love her book Sula.

Probably one of my favourite books I can’t remember ever feeling like I understood characters like I did in Song of Solomon whenever anything happened to anyone whether I liked them or not I felt what they felt. Also this book had so much tea. Toni Morrison nailed making the story funny at times but also so emotional and moving.
