Is it too late for pokie workers confessions? I worked at a sports bar (not my first choice of work: finding work while having disabilities sucks) for a while. My most sinful, soul-staining moments were on nightshifts, watching gambling addicts endlessly losing money and not doing a damn thing to help because there was no workplace culture to help. My coworkers were nice people all round but no one wanted to do RSG. Other memories: A couple (probably) using a remote control vibrator on the gaming floor. Being in charge of controlling Covid crowd numbers during a UFC fight (not fun). Walking into a shift mid-UFC match to be one of 4 workers against 180+ customers. Losing a few thousand dollars on TAB balance. Carding Asian people who were in their 40s cause they legit looked under 25. Jackpots worth more than half of my yearly earnings. There's a lot more but I'll leave with this: In an effort to improve our menu my manager tried to make sandwiches packaged in those little plastic triangles: They looked like shit and I said: "Most places make food which melts in your mouth; we make food which thaws in your mouth".

Worked in a pokies venue as security in regional NSW. Seen older people shit themselves and let it fall out of their trackie pants legs, didn’t even take them off. The worst was a woman escorted out and completely lost her mind. Fell in a garden out the front, shit herself and proceeded to crawl on the bonnet of a taxi. One of the other security ended up seriously injuring his knee while dealing with her.

I was at a industry event at the same time as a pokies convention at the Star Casino. We mingled a bit with these representatives from the biggest players from the US and Canada. I brought up the stories Ive heard of people never wanting to leave the slot machines, pissing and soiling themselves whilst they poured their savings in. In response they compared their line of work to producing pens. "If I made a pen and you used it to murder someone, should I be held responsible for creating a murder weapon?". Even as they said it, their drunken smile faltered and I saw the bits of their soul that had rotted away inside of them. I think they tell themselves that just to sleep at night.

So I worked in a pokies in Bankstown I’ve seen people shit themselves and continue playing and I’ve seen heart attacks happen. But nothing is as bad as when I first started two guys got into a fight. I ended up in the middle of it, got pushed into one of the machines with half empty glasses on my tray hitting my head bleeding and going to the hospital to get stitches whilst stinking of alcohol all over me. I was told both these guys got arrested for assault and one was arrested for stealing the other guys money most unpleasant experience I’ve had working anywhere. I had to stay home for a couple weeks due to a concussion at least I got paid I guess. give me old people shitting themselves without a care in the world anyday
