Wrong With Authority ep7: Gangs of New York

Here's one from the vaults, an old episode of now-defunct but fondly remembered podcast Wrong with Authority, featuring myself, Daniel, and our friends James Murphy and Kit Power.  On the show, we discussed movies about history and the history they're about, each of us taking turns to host and choose a movie.  This episode was Kit's turn and he chose the fascinating 2002 Scorsese film Gangs of New York, a sprawling revenge thriller based on the true history of... well, of the warring gangs of New York in the Five Points borough of the late 19th Century, featuring Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Liam Neeson, Jim Broadbent, and Brendan Gleeson.

This episode was originally published February 14th 2018.

Hope you enjoy it.

Wrong With Authority ep7: Gangs of New York

Comments

I'd recommend the show Warrior, which is just finishing its third season. Set in 1870s San Francisco Chinatown and based on a 1970s television project Bruce Lee was beginning to develop at the time of his death. Its a bit of a spiritual sibling to Gangs, but it's a lot more explicit thematically about the historical forces one wishes Scorsese had dug into more. One of the most interesting characters is an Irish community leader, brawler, and occasional bomber with a highly developed understanding of where his class interests lie. . .but tragically blind to how the racism against Chinese labor he's happy to deal in plays right nto the hands.of his enemies.
