So in the books, there are two things not explained in the movies that I think make the story more impactful, one is that the dogs at the end of the first movie (called the mutts) are actually made of the fallen tributes. Katniss describes them as having features of the kids that died and it's confirmed later that they are made of dead people. Second, the Mockingjay. It's well known that it is a symbol the government doesn't like, but it never explains why in the movies. In the second movie, you see birds that mimic people in one of the hour slots. These are the Jabberjays. The government created them to spy on the people. When they stopped working, the gov freed the birds thinking they would die out. But they didn't, they bred with mockingbirds and produced mockingjays. These birds ended up being used by anti-gov types to spread warnings and eventually became an anti-gov symbol.
