ThePopcornFairy Personal Reaction: Tick, Tick, Boom!

As a twenty-nine-year-old starving artist myself, this movie speaks levels to me. The raw creativity in the musical numbers, the cinematography, the reality of a creator's life juxtaposed against his vision... Lin really knocked it out of the park for his directorial debut. It's plain to see how much Jonathan Larson influenced him as a Broadway auteur. But most of all, this movie reminds me that it's never too late to create something amazing. As long as there's breath in these lungs, I can give something to this world. It doesn't matter where you came from, where you are now, or how many times you have to try again. Your story matters.

So this movie is a Netflix film but, the story is based on an actual musical of the same name written by Jonathan Larson himself so, every song you hear was directly written by him. However, when it originally premiered, it was actually “a rock monologue”, where he would sit at the piano like in the movie and then talk about how his life and about the musical he was writing. Jonathan was mentored by Stephen Sondheim especially during the days that he was writing the musical “RENT”, which I hope you’ll check out. The Moondance Diner, where he works, was actually the place where MJ worked in the original Spider Man movies. Jonathan worked there until RENT was accepted on Off Broadway. The Sunday scene is comprised of people who have been in the Broadway shows you see today and in the past such as Hadestown, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Sunday in The Park, etc and it also includes some of the original cast from RENT. His best friend Michael is based on his real life friend Matt O’Grady who is still alive today actually.
