Rewatching Young Royals Season 1 - Episode 1

Gooood evening beautiful Patreon family,

Today we are starting the very exciting journey of rewatching Young Royals from start to finish in preparation for the arrival of the final season.

I am not ready. But, let's do this!

Love, always ♥️

Rewatching Young Royals Season 1 - Episode 1

Comments

Wille and Erik switching places on the couch….symbolism

veri✨

No, Sweden is the most secular country in the world, but the boarding schools in Sweden are very traditional (we only have two).

Natasja Mrdjanov

Malte was doing his first casting as Simon! Imagine him playing Simon instead of Omar!! 🤯

Natasja Mrdjanov

Yes, he's supposed to be four years older. So he graduated two years ago and is now going through his military education.

Natasja Mrdjanov

It has been pointed out (not by me but by someone far cleverer than I) that in the initiation scene, Wille is tied to a statue that others have found actually exists on the grounds of Kaggeholm slott and is a copy of Michelangelo's David. The boy who would be King. Metaphors. I think it's interesting that most people (understandably) reacted badly to the spit scene. Why was that part necessary? The initiation was bad enough. But, everything in Lisa's script echoes. In season 2 episode 6 we will see Wille spit out on August everything August has made Wille swallow his whole time at Hillerska skolan.

Dennis Verner

I don’t think so as I have tried to do that as well 🙁

Audrey Gunn

We learn so much about Sara and Simon's dynamic in this first conversation that they have. We learn that Sara was treated badly at her last school and that Simon has transferred schools with her to look after her. Sara seems to resent this about Simon and says that he can drop out of Hillerska if he wants and she can take care of herself. She says she is used to being unpopular but you learn that she hates not having friends later and being ostracised. She really values belonging and friendship.

Dionne Lakey

Yes Omar is beautiful- I love the interview with the Make-up department saying that they had to ugly up his skin with scars etc. because his skin is so perfect.

Dionne Lakey

I think seeing as August was at school with Erik then Erik can't be more than 2 years older the August who is two years older then Wille. So I'd say Erik is 20/21.

Do you have the option to screen mirror or screenshare on your tv? I screen share from my phone to the tv and watch that way :)

Louise Poole 🍂

I have tried many times to log into it through the fire stick and it just won’t let me sign in 😢

Audrey Gunn

If you have a smart t.v. Or a fire stick you can I watch patreon on my t.v. I have a fire stick and go to the Amazon internet browser and sign in to patreon.

I think it’s only when you watch this first episode again that you fully realise that this show is ‘joined up’ film-making at its finest. So many things are introduced here that are echoed later, so many subtle parallels to come..and so much character development from the very beginning. Malte really is a fine actor who plays August, whom I once saw another reactor aptly describe as ‘the idiot in the turtle-neck’ so well. I can’t imagine anyone else as that character, nor envisage him playing a different role. The chemistry between Edvin and Omar is something truly special and yes, agreed, Omar is beautiful! 🫠 It was great seeing you smiling throughout and feeling the Young Royals love all over again. I feel as if I am emotionally limbering up for season 3 by re-watching this with you, but who am I kidding? I’m still SO NOT READY! ❤️👑❤️

I finally got here and I forgot how much I loved this show and it’s so good to go back and see what they were all like at the start whilst knowing how they all are by the end of season two. Thanks for revisiting this, my only gripe is that I wish I could watch Patreon on the tv, would be so much easier!!

Audrey Gunn

I love how even in these early episodes, even before he was crown prince, you can see just how much Wilhelm's anxiety is affecting him and his mothers reaction to it. Edvin does so well showing it, that without the show ever having to say it, we know that he deals with anxiety and doesn't like media appearances.

Dan

Yeah! Me too!

Ingrid Machado Pena

Me. I wish I was there 😪

Jayne Riley

Who's excited for Omar's first solo concert tomorrow? ❤️❤️❤️

Ingrid Machado Pena

I watched this this morning, and was going to comment after I had breakfast, but I don't remember my thoughts, I guess I will have to watch again to refresh my memory... I do remember I enjoyed your reaction!

Erin

😂

Jayne Riley

Same 😂 I would win in that category

Ingrid Machado Pena

We’re all in training for season 3! ❤️👑❤️😂

Ruth May

Yeah, I agree. Omar said in an interview that he was so impressed with Edvin that he did everything possible to get the part, running his fingers through Edvin’s hair and pulling out all the stops. He was late getting there and so sweaty that he said he had to clean up with paper towels before the try-out scene. 😂 In my opinion, Omar was destined to be Simon and look at how hard he’s worked since to use the springboard it gave him to start his own beauty brand and develop his music career. I only wish I could go to his first big solo concert! ❤️👑❤️

Ruth May

I´ve got goosebumps the moment Omar starts singing !!! I don´t know if i can watch all 12 episodes because of August, I can´t stan him, not at all. Seeing him makes me sooo angry. I really hope Wille and Simon getting they´re happy end, they deserve it and we too ;)

Prinsassy

The undertoned music reminds me of Stranger things, pretty much... I´ve noticed it only because you mentioned this.

Prinsassy

This was fun. Thanks Jackie!

Diane Furlong

I'm loving seeing all the Young Royals crew back in the comments 😍

Jackie-Ross Lavender

I knew you'd have some great insight!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

As regards casting the part of Simon Malte (August) originally auditioned for the part. Simon was always going to be a singer but not necessarily a Latino. Omar was running late for the audition. Edvin already knew who Omar was as Omar was in a boy band and Edvin had been to the concert. Edvin is just over 4 years younger than Omar. When they met at the audition they had amazing chemistry and got on really well. Omar said in an interview that when it came to singing at the audition he sang a lot as he knew he had strength in this area and had never acted before. I think I could go on Mastermind and my specialist subject would be Young Royals and Omar.

Jayne Riley

Yes it was me who told you about the symbolism posts. You should definitely read them they are so interesting. I have been learning so much about art philosophy, music and filmaking.

Jayne Riley

Recently joined your Patreon and it is the first time I ever ever joined one. Loved watching your reaction in full and looking forward to the journey. Enjoy your insights into the lighting and camera work and the symbolism - I have noticed the use of doorways in this season. Glad this cheered you up.

MIchelle Arbery

Yay! Thx Jackie!!! They were indeed looking for a male character with Latin roots who can sing. So although there were also other potential “Simons” I feel like Omar was meant to be Simon all along 🥰 Edvin got cast first and had to do some chemistry reads with some other actors. And Omar almost didn’t get the part because he showed up a bit late for the casting. But obviously everything turned out just right.

Frances

I’ve thought about couple of the questions you asked: yes, this show did premiere during Covid, in 2021. The majority of Swedes are Lutheran, though the second biggest group have no religion at all; I have the feeling that the saying of grace before the meal is another one of the longtime traditions at Hillerska. I think the four different shows that you have reacted to on this channel that are about teenage characters are each great in their own way. Young Royals and its look at class differences and how they impact the relationships between the characters, especially between the royal family, like Wille and August, and the everyday people like Simon and Sara, are the source of a lot of the drama in the show. With Heartstopper, it’s a look at younger teens and a wide variety of sexual orientations, as well as some sadly common teenage problems, for example, eating disorders and depression. Skam gave us an almost documentary feel, and a slice of life as it showed us the character of Isak finding his authentic self and becoming the person he really was. Druck does something similar while putting its own spin on things with David and his struggles to be accepted as the young man he knows he truly is. I think they’re all splendid and do what they do beautifully, and I feel no need to rank them as one being better than the other, since they’re all four trying (and succeeding) to do different things.

Lane Wright

I have really missed your comments, Dennis. ❤️

Ruth May

OMG THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY

scarr

Thank you again for showing the video full-screen. Symbolism. Yes, you notice so much when you have watched the show a couple of thousand times. Erik and Wille switching places on the couch and so many others. But so many people have complained about the spit in the initiation. We get it, why be so graphic? But as with so many other seemingly minor pieces throughout the series this is meant to be memorable. Because in season 2, episode 6 we come full circle as Wille spits out on August all the crap August has been feeding him from the beginning.

Dennis Verner

Here we go!!! 💜💜💜

Ingrid Machado Pena

Even though we know what to expect in season 1, it’s going to be emotionally demanding to go back there! Can you imagine what it’s going to be like for season 3? 🤯

Ruth May

Can't wait to rewatch Young Royals with you. I don't want to think about it being over soon .😭

Jayne Riley

Can’t wait for this but will have to as I’m literally falling asleep so will watch it tmrw xx
