Herald of the Stars: Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-One

Sabrina Fite, thank you so much for joining the Herald of the Stars Patron.

“You sure know how to flatter a man, Cybersmith Paorach,” says Calligos.

Ròsìn raises a finely crafted eyebrow and Calligos clears his throat.

“What I meant to say is that I am in a position to offer you a Freeblade contract.”

“Whatever would I do with that? Trader Calligos. I am to remain in this system and oversee the construction of Charon. I have little need for ground troops and the weapons used by most Knights are far too powerful to be firing inside a space station.”

“That’s not important if you’re clearing zombie infested vessels. You can also use them for hull patrols and establishing forward positions in enemy hangars, or defending shipyards.”

Ròsìn shakes her head, “I would love to look over the Knights you have, but I do not need them. I can achieve all those things more efficiently with other machines, no matter how fearsome they might be. You will have to find some other way to exert influence in SR-651. You won’t sneak it in through me.”

“That was not my intention,” says Calligos, his tone tinged with annoyance. “The two Questoris-Pattern Knights and their supporting forces have suffered some degradation that I do not have the expertise available to repair. Really, you’d be doing me a favour by taking them off my hands.”

“That’s a lie, Trader Calligos, at least in part. There’s no way you don’t have the contacts. If you really are struggling, Logis Vakul will most certainly take them off your hands, though I’m sure there’s some history there as to why you haven’t already.

“Aldrich might have a use for your Freeblades, but considering how he usually does things, he’ll purchase the STC then build his own Knights, or construct an Ordinatus out of a boring machine or macro-crawler that has so much firepower it can obliterate whole companies of war walkers. We’d like them. I am sure we could find a use for them, but not for a price we won’t see coming. Not when we have no shortage of security and a dearth of fear.”

“You’re a difficult woman to please, Cybersmith Paorach.”

“You’ll need to aim a little higher than two Knights if you want to reach my strike zone, Trader Calligos. I am well shielded. I expect an Ark Mechanicus, at the very least.”

Calligos lets out a great booming laugh, “A princess in a adamantine tower? No matter what you make your hair of, no one is going to be able to climb it with your standards set so high. Nay, I prefer my legs intact and hips unshattered and shall leave you to your duties, for you are surely married to them with bands of brass and gold.”

“Trader Calligos, you should not have scorned lady luck so harshly. She clearly stole your fortune in the divorce.”

“I do hope not. Perhaps a prayer or two would not go amiss though, for surely everything else has done so since I arrived at this cursed system. Good evening to you, Cybersmith Paorach.”

“Farewell, Trader Calligos.”

I sigh a little as Ròsìn comes over. While I am grateful for the gesture, I’d much rather she stays away from Logis Vakul. She’s sufferable, not insufferable. At least I’ll be on hand to clear up any potential dramatic accusations of heresay before the mechadendrites start flying.

Calligos leaves in search of food, then talks to Lonceta and Maeve about the demonstration of our prototype Mark III infantry equipment that they’re setting up on stage for a demonstration at the end of the party.

Meanwhile, I tune in on Brigid and Lyre whose conversation is rather confrontational.

Lyre approaches Brigid on her way over to the boys with all the social grace of a man marching to battle. He’s wearing his Commodore uniform though I am unsure who he thinks he’s fooling at this point.

I see the slight slump in Brigid’s shoulders as she realises she isn’t going to escape from whatever agenda the prickly Inquisitor is pushing this evening. She grabs a drink and some canapes from passing servers and turns around.

Brigid says, “Good evening, Inquisitor Hamiz. Why does an old bloodhound such as yourself seek me with such a grim face.”

“Yes, yes, hello to you too, Chief Purser Issengrund. Before you ask, I’m not here to requisition your resources. I can see that they’re being put to use well enough. I actually wanted to talk to you about something a bit more personal.”

“In the middle of a banquet hall?”

“Please, no one would dare listen in and if they are, I do not care for their opinions and nor should you.”

I piggyback off Brigid’s sensor returns with a discrete vox message, “I know you don’t need rescuing, but if you still want to play the damsel, just say the word and I’ll be right over. The safe word is a teeth rattling slap to Lyre’s face.”

A small smile ghosts across Brigid’s face, “Have at it then, Inquisitor. Though I suspect I should start with ‘Not even for all the thrones in the galaxy’ and escalate from there.”

“No need to be so hasty. I was hoping you would relax your stance on concubines for Aldrich. There’s an awful lot of healthy Ortellius members running about recently and likely many more to come.”

Brigid nibbles her canape slowly and stares Lyre in the eyes, “Unless you have an adaptive STC in your coat pockets so that I can commission an adequate replacement husband, the answer is no. What’s your actual request, Inquisitor. Not whatever ridiculous idea and bribe that you’ve cooked up to soften me for your actual request.”

Lyre stands straight, cupping his hands behind his back. He speaks his lines with the passion one would think should be reserved for dire portents.

“Purser Issengrund, your husband is a new line of navigators, one, rumour would have it, that was created by the Emperor himself. I just want to get ahead of the trouble coming your way and get a solution in place before Imperial shipping is crippled by pointless drama for your husband’s favour.”

“I’m listening.”

“I require one of your stasis boxes full of sperm samples. One for each navigator house.”

Brigid cackles, “Oh, that’s quite a handy job you're assigning me, Inquisitor. The answer is still no. The truth is you don’t care about the samples, you just want control of my husband and his children. Neither he nor I will stand for that. Aldrich would insist on raising all those children nearby and that is quite impractical. For all his talents at multitasking, even he cannot raise half a million kids at once with the love and care they need.”

Well, I could control that many Servitors, so I could do it. Having so many clones of my face running around would cause all sorts of trouble though!

“You might see this as meaningless sentimentality,” Brigid continues, “but when you navigate through the Warp, one needs a stable psyche. You need an anchor for your ego. A reason to shut out the whispers of the Ruinous Powers, focus on the screams of the Astronomicon for weeks on end and not give into despair and temptation, dooming your whole ship with a short glimpse at the domains of false gods.

“For some it is pride, faith, fear, or discipline that keeps one from breaking. Both Aldrich and I believe that love is far more effective. Isn’t that romantic? Every ship in the Imperial Navy forging through the storms of hell for love. Family. Spouses. Friends. Humanity. It matters not where their love is directed, only that they prevail. Your petty thoughts would leave those bonds unformed and the Imperium far more vulnerable than if you’d never meddled.”

“Preposterous!” says Lyre. “There is nothing wrong with adoption and there is no one who can invest more than the state in the wellbeing of its future leaders. The Imperium is held together by the loyalty of orphaned children nurtured by the scholar progenium. Their fierce and resilient minds are the backbone of our armies, administration, and medical care. The only love they will ever need is that of the Imperium. My education in those hallowed halls was without peer. Mutants are a distasteful necessity and respond well to a firm hand. A large batch of well trained Navigators of good stock would provide the Imperium with a level of stability that hasn’t been seen since the Crusade Era.”

“I didn’t think I would get you to admit love makes the galaxy go round, Inquisitor, no matter how twisted yours might be,” Brigid shakes her head. “If you still wish to embark on this short-circuited scheme of yours, you can get all the samples you need from all the poor navigators Aldrich is healing and in a far more practical timescale.

“You don’t need our permission for that, you can ask House Ortellius and House Lafiel yourself. Depending on how the treatment goes, they come out as second or third cousins to Aldrich. That’s more than enough to get the genetic stability and purity that navigator houses chase with such clinical passion.”

“That’s not good enough. The houses will feel slighted and not use such genetics in their most important lines, the ones that actually control and continue their houses.”

“Inquisitor, this is a terrible idea. The biologis will warn you that artificial births of navigators have abysmal success rates. Not only that, but you would be handing Aldrich a strong and legitimate claim to every navigator house in the galaxy. Aren’t you desperately seeking for a way to limit his influence by having the Pater Nova reign him in? You would be handing Alrich the position on an auramite platter and placing him at the heart of Terra. That would destroy everything good that we have built out here. Aldrich will not agree and neither will I.”

“I’m afraid I must insist, Purser Issengrund. Your daughter’s sanctioned psyker status might look legitimate, but her birth dates do not match the length of your travels. She simply has not lived long enough to have visited Terra or a schola psykana in a segmentum capital. I’d be quite happy to misplace that report, but I need you to help me. There are plenty of ways to prevent Aldrich from having legitimate claims on navigator children and the Imperium will fail within the next few millennia without his genetic stock.”

“A baseless exaggeration,” says Brigid. “The decline of Astartes geneseed is far more pressing. Still, I do not appreciate your insinuation and I shall take great pleasure proving otherwise.”

Brigid voxes, “Get over here immediately, Alpia. The Inquisitor is trying to break up our family with concubines and free samples.”

“Wow! Not cool, Mum. I’ll be right over,” voxes Alpia in our family chat group.

I see all three boys start sniggering, but they excuse themselves from their current conversation partners and slip through the crowd and surround Alpia, stopping anyone from engaging her in conversation.

Lyre says, “That is troubling, if your claims about the Astartes are true. How would you even know that? The chapters do not share their knowledge.”

“Historical trends, future knowledge, even common sense. No one can repeatedly make flawless copies from generations of copies. Take your pick Inquisitor. Any Magos Biologis can confirm it. Until the surviving Primarch’s stop running from their failures, like unloved, poorly supported children, the Astartes will continue to degrade.”

“Oh, and what would you know of where the Primarchs went and why?”

Brigid shrugs, “We found a cache of Crusade Era Space Marine wargear. They kept meticulous records of Primarch sightings and their deeds. The Barghests bought the gear. We don’t actually know why several of them disappeared, only that they did. Buried history, perhaps, but nothing classified.”

“I’ll be the judge of that.”

“You can judge all you like, Inquisitor. It won’t change anything.”

Alpia, Fial, Dareaca, and Luan join Brigid.

“What’s up, Mum?” says Alipa.

“Inquisitor Lyre requires you to prove your psychic purity.”

“What, is he trying his hand at matchmaking?” says Alpia. “That’s disgusting.”

Brigid sighs, “You could say that, but you know that’s not what I meant. Just get this over with.”

Alpia says, “So, let me get this clear. Inquisitor Hamiz presumes to order me to call upon our God. Not because there is some great evil to be purged but because he does not believe in our honesty?”

“It’s my job, young lady,” says Lyre.

“I find your lack of faith disturbing, Inquisitor,” says Alpia.

Lyre says, “I do not care. Prove you are bound or I will throw you on the Blackship.”

Alpia sighs, “Yeah, whatever. Be careful what you wish for Inquisitor.”

“Go ahead Sweet Pea,” says Brigid. “Aldrich is watching and we’re all standing with you.”

“Just so you know, Inquisitor, some poor sod will be getting their soul burned to a crisp to show you this, so don’t ask again,” says Alpia.

With my third eye, I see Alpia lightly tug her bond with the Emperor with a request for a small mote of energy to train with. The connection blazes to life, giving her far more that she requests and her whole body is covered with golden flames.

Lyre stumbles back into a table. Brigid and the boys back away from the heat and the carpet begins to smoulder.

“Dad! Help!” shouts Alpia.

Future empress? But man the age gap.

Artman

Cool I look forward to reading it and yea they are rather unpleasant. Lore saids if I recall correctly that they blast away anything in their way with it but the psycher is used up so totally that their very soul is used as fuel. By the end of a knight using a few beams of psychic agony their won't be a single trace of the psycher that was used as a battery. In fact that's were the power from the beam comes from. Not just the psychic energy but the agony of the psycher having their very existence used as fuel apparently gives the beams a bit more oomf.

frogogre1

Oh, I like your idea that it's the Knight Houses who don't like the new altered designs because it makes them less relevant and teaming up with some mechanicus because they don't like change and believe it counts as alien mechanisms, which to be fair, it somewhat is. Given that Knight pilots usually hate psykers and mutants, having them be replaced by them as pilots is rather insulting. The opposing side could be some vindictive mechanicus who rather like the idea of cutting up enemy machines and using them for fuel and think that a better Knight isn't something the Imperium can turn down. Psykers are valuable and vulnerable, so putting them in a big stompy robots is a good way to protect them and get more out of them. It's just the sort of project that Aldrich would put together for Alpia. Those agony beams sound rather unpleasant, I don't think I will be using those! Maybe a set series of spells and technomancy achieved via arcanotech, like psybernetics for Knights, directed by a psyker, but fuelled by wraithbone.

Edmund Latham

Kinda like when big E said he wasn’t a god and everyone went (but I think you are)

Brudog2

Alright though will the unrest be because the knight families will be less relevant because if Rosin's knight is mass produced eugenics isn't necessary for knight use or will the unrest be because of the question of psychers. As I mentioned earlier there are knights that use psychers as fuel for there attacks. In fact there is one that uses the fact the psycher is in pure agony while in use to fire beams of pure psychic agony at the enemy. Back to the question of how much weaker is Rosin's knights since they obviously can't to that. Though to her credit since they don't to that her knights won't have the same limited battle time as those that use psychers as fuel.

frogogre1

Happy to help

frogogre1

Oh, good spot. I'll change it. Thank you.

Edmund Latham

Keep guessing!

Edmund Latham

Ha! Cheers. I was wondering if someone would comment on that. :)

Edmund Latham

Ròsìn's Knight is modified to use wraithbone to fuel psychic effects, controlled by the psyker. It would probably make sense to have a co-pilot as well. The other modification is a filter to prevent the memories and skills of the previous pilots stored by the Machine-Spirit from over writing the current pilot and killing them. Knight families undergo selection/ eugenics to prevent this from happening. Ròsìn's design means that is less necessary, especially with Aldrich's superior MIUs. I do like your idea of there being unnecessary civil unrest because of a modified Knight. I could see that being just the sort of information that Lyre might 'pass along'.

Edmund Latham

I do like the list of gifts that have been sent to him. I think that would make for a good comedy moment in the upcoming Lathe Worlds ark. I also like the increase in devotion to Aldrich, despite him hoping it would go away. It's very setting and character appropriate. Thank you for the ideas!

Edmund Latham

Mmmmm I would go with multiple acts. At this point Aldrich has helped several houses of navigators each probably has their own traditions and way they go about things. So having Aldrich read of a list of gifts from each house would be interesting and a good way to show their differences. So something along the lines of this house pledges 20 of their finest daughters to be his concubines. The next house pledges to have 35 of their strongest psycher makes serve as Psy-Errants in his army. The crazy part to Aldrich about these pledges is that their permanent. Which means Aldrich would then have paperwork saying they have to produce so many people they promised for so long as their house exists. What would be even worse to really dig it in is at the end of some of the pledges on the paper they give to Aldrich They'll wright at the end ' to Aldrich master of the Astronamacon' Showing that by fixing their deformities and giving them places of respect and community on stellar fleet Aldrich has only caused their faith in him to deepen rather than fade like he'd hoped.

frogogre1

Cool would be interesting to read how the knights of the iron foundation work out. Though I do wonder about the modified knight pattern for Psy-Errants because if I'm remembering right she modified the design first so that they could fix the ones they had and that it was easier for pychers to use. Which does add a bit off a moral question? Because apparently in Warhammers knight mech lore there are several knight varients that use psychers as fuel for either attacks or defense. I don't know of one knight that's actually been modified to be easier for psychers to use. So thqt does give rise to an intresting questions. How much weaker will Rosin's safer knight patterns be and will that fact she can field more of her knight patterns at a time due the fact her's don't use their pilots as fuel make up for it. The whole thing is a rather interesting question especially considering this type of question caused a war before. As was mentioned by Lyre's apprentice when they invented a new type of patrol ship and the battle ship lobby got involved causing the whole thing to devolve into an unneeded and unnecessary heresy.

frogogre1

Brigid and the boys away from the heat and the carpet begins to smoulder. Probably you lost back off?

Mikołaj

TFTC! Hmmmm... I'm guessing The Big E is about to turn Alpia into a Navigator.

DaftWully

As I didnt see anyone congratulating earlier, good pun with the "handy job"

Mikołaj

Aldrich and Brigid gobsmacked over what to do with Aldrich’s new 200 concubines. Complete with support staff, neonatal care experts, pediatricians, and cruiser with escorts. It comes with marriage requests for his first 20 born males and 40 born females. Alternately: A “museum of curiosities” which is just various badly mutated humans with a few actual xenos mixed in.

Miguel Garcia

The Inquisitor? I think falsely accusing and Inquisitor would go poorly. Now, having Lyre turn to heretical actions to get Aldrich under control, that would be interesting. I can even see in the story where I could fit that in. Thank you for the inspiration!

Edmund Latham

Yes, Ròsìn is 'secretly' the head of the Iron Foundation. The other two knights are used by the Psy-Errants. I hadn't thought about making the Iron Foundation a Knight Order. I do rather like the idea of Aldrich having two Knight Orders with different purposes. I could also make the Iron Foundation a Titan Legion instead. It's certainly worth doing one of those.

Edmund Latham

Aldrich knows he can't do anything about it now, and Big E's interference does protect Alpia from Chaos. He's definitely torn on the issue and you can be sure Aldrich is keeping score.

Edmund Latham

Hmm, Aldrich might cooperate on that, but there is no way Brigid will now as she is rather vindictive and Aldrich is annoyed enough to help her. I think a dramatic falling out is more likely. I do like your idea though Lizard King. I'll think about putting in a reaction chapter that goes into some of the details. Maybe Brigid ranting to Aldrich or Fleet Command about what happened and fit in some of this overly long explanation.

Edmund Latham

Big E would do that, for sure. You're right that this does have something to do with navigators as a whole.

Edmund Latham

Eh, he's not an idiot, just horribly out of touch and jaded. You're right that I should think of something good though.

Edmund Latham

It's something else. I am hoping to be unpredictable this time!

Edmund Latham

A reaction chapter from the cured navigators? Perhaps an outrageous act of generosity as a thank you from them would be interesting. Something that would shock Aldrich. Ideas?

Edmund Latham

I'll be revealing it next chapter. I was struck by inspiration and did not plan this bit at all. As for when the consequences will turn up in my head uninvited, we shall have to see! At the very least, it should be unpredictable.

Edmund Latham

Cheers!

Edmund Latham

That would be awesome and funny I think. Imagining the regular crew meeting people like this always is a treat

Brudog2

Someone needs to call him a heretic.

michael smith

Actually since it's been awhile since it's been mentioned that Ròsìn is a knight that does bring a rather interesting question since she actually modified a knight pattern to make it easier to use does that mean since she's effectively head of the iron foundation we can expect knights to be mass produced by the iron foundation at a later date? It would add an interesting bit to the internal power structure of stellar fleet if the iron foudation had power through not only there influence over the vat born but they also had power through controlling a steady supply of knights for stellar fleet. Especially since when the crusade against the orks happens the knights my very well be mobilized. Which will be a demonstration not only of the ships built by stellar fleet but also of the new modified knight pattern made by Ròsìn.

frogogre1

man i can imagen Aldrich losing his temper at Big E over him playing with his children. Aldrich with wings of gold eyes of fire and a scowl that tears reality, power walking at those who fucked with his kids.

STORRM

Please be the machine God. That is so fucking awesome. I will definitely will be interesting such a chapter but I suggest to make it be an extra chapter then anything else. There is a relatively simple solution to make both sides happy. Make a show a false action which both sides. Agree upon beforehand. This will preserve the Inquisition image. Well simultaneously maintaining Aldrich as a reasonable man.

lizard King

The TLDR is that it's not about solving a problem, it's about controlling Aldrich. Lyre is looking for weak spots, or trying to create them, so that he can get Aldrich to do what Lyre thinks is best for the Imperium. ------------------------ Lyre is old and not used to dealing with people who can refuse him and this really annoys him. If one of his schemes works, then great, but if it doesn't he knows that by being an obnoxious prat, it makes any suggestions that come from Raphael, seem more reasonable. Unfortunately for Lyre, Brigid saw through his scheme and called him on it, at least part of it anyway. Honestly, trying to split up Aldrich and Brigid would count as a win for Lyre as well. Anything that might weaken the Stellar Fleet is good in his book as Inquisitors hate independent concentrations of power. They don't care that Aldrich is improving a situation. They care that he's doing it without the Imperium (Inquisition's) say so. This is a fairly common problem that the Inquisition have with most Magi and Admech. They're also used to powerful Tech-Priests finding objects, or performing experiments that they should not and causing a whole heap of trouble. If Aldrich is dealing with the Inquisition, he's not creating trouble. Aldrich is a self professed specialist in cybernetics, bionics, and arcanotech. As far as the Inquisition is concerned, Aldrich is capable of mass producing psybernetics, assassins, elite Skitarii, and mind control devices. He's also a Rogue Trader and can freely sell these things. He can turn up wherever he wishes, upset the balance of power, and subtlety install whatever government he pleases. We know that Aldrich won't do that. The Inquisition would be confused if he does not, as that's what they're used to dealing with. Short of sanctioning Aldrich and attacking his Fleet, they have no legal levers of control. They could make something up and attack him, but they don't know what he can do, or who all his allies are, so that's not a good idea. They do know he is allies with a Space Marine chapter that's under constant scrutiny, so weaken Aldrich and they can weaken the Barghests as well. Instead, they want to drain his resources, and break up his control. When the pressure mounts, they'll be able to get concessions out of him. Right now, they're still poking and prodding, looking for ways to do so. That they could simply ask politely, and Aldrich would comply to most reasonable requests, is a completely alien idea to them. Even if they did try that, and find that it works, they would still want some reassurance. On the other side, Aldrich is trying to show he is reasonable and open to cooperation by assigning Raphael as his Master of Whispers. He's opened his arms, said "Come at be Bro", and they've jumped at the opportunity and found nothing. Because they found nothing, now it looks like the Inquisition is working for Aldrich, not supervising him. This makes the Inquisition look weak, which they cannot abide, and risks civil unrest. In some ways, Aldrich isn't the problem, its that other, less reasonable people, will see that the Inquisition can't reign in a single man and his small fleet and then wonder what they could get away with. The Inquisition can only be in so many places at once, and if enough people challenge them at once, inspired by Aldrich, then they will actually be in trouble. Pretty multi-layered eh? Would you be interested in a chapter that goes into this, or should I leave it to readers to think about and come up with their own theories?

Edmund Latham

Yes that does work when you're dealing with ordinary humans. But you're dealing with with the warp ie the realm of endless chaos and energy. You got to be more subtle and more cautious when you dealing with that. I comprehend the reasoning behind the inquisitors action but at the same time as an Inquisitor he should know better always be careful especially when you're dealing with the the warp and related items or humans.

lizard King

From the morals and policies of the Imperium of 40k the inquisitor is pushing for something that makes perfect sense and is the most optimal solution. Throw bodies at it and, when some inevitably succeed through sheer chance, use the survivors to continue.

Miguel Garcia

Aldridge could just give The Inquisitor Arthur gave him to pay a price. For the knowledge of better navigator Gene treatment and offer to heal several navigators of his choosing to solve this issue. The fact that this Inquisitor is pushing it implies that he's somewhat has a couple neurons and a crossfire.

lizard King

You all are totally ignoring the possibility that Big E could actually support the good Inquisitor in his quest to get thousands of genetically healthy Navigators

Mikołaj

Tyftc!!! Love it as always. Can't wait to see the idiot inquisitors reaction lol

Turean Allen

Big E obviously likes the ladies. Either that or he just tried to indirectly smote Ham-sandwhich

Apollo Above

On the subject of the Pater Nova shouldn't he be looking for Aldrich already? Not Aldrich specifically just whoever relit the astronamacon which was Aldrich though whether the Pater Nova knows that yet is yet to be seen. Makes me wonder if theirs some cult of navigators out there looking for Aldrich because of the miracle of relighting the Astronamacon though their worse than the iron foundation because they were formed on typical imperium religious zeal rather than Aldrich's principals of unity. It won't help that if such a cult of navigators and stellar fleet ever meet they'll see all Aldrich's done to fix their mutations making their zealotry worse as theirs even a reward for finding their saint which isn't usually how that works out.

frogogre1

I think Big E’s star child progressing past baby has made him a bit mischievous. Is it boredom? Or just kids being kids?

Miguel Garcia
