Drake Maye Week 13 Analysis

Comments

Until this offense fixes the offensive line and upgrades the perimeter group, it'll be tough sledding for Maye. Some bright spots but AVP's play design and selection seem solidly below average. Gibson and Stevenson looked decent butHenry and possibly Douglas are the only perimeter guys who seem worth keeping. Maye adding some anticipation throws to his bag is super encouraging. Buckner disrupted at least 7 plays, though NE had better answers in the 2nd half. He totally ruined the 1st half. Linebackers got picked on in coverage consistently and 40 Jones is going to have a rough Monday meeting. 2:00 Long trap. 40 can be inconsistent with tackling. That was rough. 8:00 3rd down anticipation throw. Good sign that Maye is adding new tools to his belt. 11:00 nice deuce block teaching point. Stewart (90) got paid this year and is a load so seeing him chucked into the Gatorade is interesting. 15:18 trap into the teeth of the defense. Not great play selection 16:00 3rd down, what a shitty mesh concept the 2 back check down. Buckner is just a menace; keeping a tally of plays wrecked by him. Horrible red zone sequence. 20:00 nice chunk run by Maye but how was the defense caught this off guard? Man coverage against a dangerous running QB; you don't think he'd scramble right? Nah. 24:30 going from 1st and 2 to 12 to 22. Another horrible red zone sequence. First hold was a little ticky tack. Second one saved Maye from getting eaten by 99. 29:40 A 6'7 300 lbs abominable snowman with nearly 35 inch arms. Good luck with that. 34:00 RG just loses his fucking mind on the stem. Should I block the abominable snowman game wrecker? Really shocking. 40:30 old school bob. What About Bob? is one of Emily's favorite movies. 42:10 nice anticipation throw for a TD. Franklin 44 giving off big Rodrigo vibes taking an L from TE2. 45:10 the ol hoss y juke. Polk has looked SO bad in the tape we've seen this year. 47:25 wrap in with anticipation and a complimentary eye F-ing. Good sign. 53:40 tons of space on this play and the whole drive really. Feels a little too prevent-y. 58:50 Buckner ruins another play. Diagnosing the play instantly and grabbing the center. Really nice to see. 1:02:00 the Bob wrinkle was pretty decent. 1:03:00 rough miss on the slant. 1:05:20 post wheel out. Is this a dated play because of how long it takes for it to develop? What makes you want to rethink it? Another nice anticipation throw by Maye. 1:10:42 nice detail on how Maye playing the sit route INT play a bit fast. If he throws to the opposite shoulder, it's a safe completion. 1:13:00 2 for 5 shift. Seems like something AVP would want to exploit. 1:15:30 another nice wrap in. Attacking 45 and 44 in coverage has been a staple of most game plans against this defense all year. 1:22:00 horrible tackling by 40, over pursuit by 44. Terrible defensive rep. 1:24:00 CFL option is a winner I guess. 2nd to last series: Super conservative and bland play calls on 1st and 2nd. 3rd down corner route to 3 was open. Thanks for the breakdown, JT

Given the line problems, and Henry being your best playmaker, I thought Maye looked good.

Brottom quartile defense vs a brottom quartile offense? Let's Check It Out! We call 41 on defense with the luscious hair Power Ballad. What a hunk. For real though, excited to see how the offense and defense looks under the hood. From the broadcast, seemed like there was all kinds of space in the passing game, especially on 3rd downs. Been sick of Bradley's scheme for a bit.

The penalty at 1:21 that called back the TD was illegal motion on #3, for those who were wondering.
