Pre-release for the (first) laptop video!

By the way, I'm making a laptop video! Normally I make a post about a week in advance on what I'm working on, but still wasn't sure if this video was even going to be about these particular systems. There are certainly some other promising laptop candidates, including a troubled Compaq LTE Elite 4/75CX from my pre-haul collection. So here's the first of what will be many laptop videos. Hope you enjoy!

my last high school had a allot of old laptops from the 90s but they made them even slower by installing Windows XP in some, they are probably e-waste by now :(

Very much appreciated the zip drive sounds. Never heard 'em before. And that eject mechanism was like someone getting thrown out. 11/10, would recommend!

I have no problem with delays. I have waited this long, a little bit longer delay will not hurt me. Plus if you are able to make more content out of this machine, then go for it. Just let me know when you are ready to sell.

I’m happy to re-unite you with this system! It is quite a nice one. Hopefully everything goes well with the replacement LCD. Looks like delivery of it got pushed to Tuesday. Still no luck finding a replacement CD drive though.

Hey Mike, I am in love with that Toshiba. This video brought back great nostalgia of a time long ago. This is when I wish Patreon would support gifs because you would be getting the Philip Jay Frey gif of shut up and take my money.

I find myself shaking hands with danger more and more these days, so maybe I'll try my hand at lithium cell rebuilding. Re-built plenty of NiCD packs in the past.

I need to pick one of those up! The ThinkPad 760E was my only retro laptop (until now), so I've just been getting by with CD-Rs and ZIP disks. Would be funny to see it connect to my Ubiquiti APs!

MikeTech

Yup! First thing I replaced upon receipt of this unit. This one was fortunately a survivor.

For connectivity on these laptops I use a wireless PCMCIA card. I still use my 802.11a DLink card. I like a because it runs at 5Ghz and can still connect to most modern N routers. B, on the other hand, is disabled on most modern routers.

Now I just have to work up the nerve to split open those very brittle cases. I really need to get a 3D printer...

Be careful with older IBM laptops; they can have several hidden batteries. For example the 760XD has one battery for the clock/time/bios and another one for standby mode. The latter battery is an evil leaky Varta.

Also lithium batteries can disconnect when they discharge too deeply. There are ways to re-awaken then at the cell level, but I never went down that rabbit hole. And when it comes to the AC adapter if it cannot supply enough power then the laptop will need to be able to draw from the battery to compensate. Your first adapter could have been weak-ish,

On laptops this age you may get heat issues. The older thermal pastes they used to use tend to harden and become good insulators. Fans also age, so between the two you might get thermal throttling.

I used them pretty heavily back in the day. I don't think they were very popular outside of the US. LS120 is definitely a better alternative, being backward compatible with standard floppy disks and all. But ZIP drives still have a certain charm to me.

MikeTech

Yay, another post work, Friday afternoon video !!!! Best way to end my week and start the weekend.

I never owned a Zip drive; I used the LS120 floppy drives. Also have a Toshiba RAM drive somewhere.
