Marines turn up even at the one "cool" bar, get drunk and then want to fight when they don't get laid, so forget about "nightlife". Food options are basically choosing between Pizza Hut or Burger King. 17 long desert miles between you and the next signs of civilization in one direction, 150 miles in the other. Despite only 17 miles, temperatures still regularly 20 degrees hotter than Joshua Tree due to geography/elevation. On hot days the smell from the marine's open pit sewage plant wafts over town. Overall, do not recommend.
