Sally Coulthard discusses the countryside throughout history

In November's Time Team News, our 'Book of the Month' is A Brief History of the Countryside in 100 Objects, by Sally Coulthard.

Sally read Archaeology & Anthropology at Oxford, before returning to her native Yorkshire to set up a small holding. She’s a bestselling author of over 25 books on rural life, and is a columnist for Country Living.

Her latest book uses artefacts, from the everyday to the obscure, to tell the story of life in the countryside over the centuries. It’s received the thumbs-up from Time Team’s own Francis Pryor, who apparently “couldn’t put it down”.

Join Dani and Sally for an extended version of our interview, here exclusively on Patreon.

What a fascinating book! Will definitely be getting a copy !

We have this book, it's wonderful. And it was interesting to hear her discuss why some of the artifacts were chosen.

What a pleasure to watch this podcast. Great stuff!

I would just like to say that both Time Team News as well as the Time Team podcast feel like you have hit on something good, formats that seem to have great potential to continue and develop. And adding more in-depth discussions like this as Patreon exclusives, or answering questions in the podcast, feels "satisfying" in a way that sometimes some of the episode-related bonus content hasn't quite done for me - the stories can be told in a self-contained way, instead of having to wait several months for the actual episode before understanding what certain things in the bonus content really was about, or how this piece of the puzzle joins with what is going on. Don't get me wrong, I love the live dig stuff for the ambience and the Patreon exclusives are not the main reason for me to support Time Team!

THANK YOU. I WILL NEVER LOOK AT 'OBJECTS' IN THE SAME WAY NOW. JANICE

Sally's book sounds very interesting; maybe to be read in conjunction with Oliver Rackham's similarly-named classic.

Very interesting...
