2025-08-25 22:32:16 +0000 UTCI've talked some in the Slack about how I feel about Chinatown but I figure I'll also leave some more considered thoughts here. I'm Chinese American, and generally, I do find playing through the Chinatown section to be a pretty shitty time. A big part of that is how the most foregrounded characters are huge stereotypes. When my introduction to the area is meeting with the yellow peril dragon lady, it's hard to give the rest of it the benefit of the doubt. It also doesn't help that the Kuei Jin's involvement in the story is very much a yellow peril story. I also don't give VtMB as much grace as I might give Big Trouble in Little China because of when it was made: to me, 2004 feels very solidly in "they should have known better" territory. When it comes to improving VtMB's Chinatown, I do think it would help though to have a few more Chinese characters who aren't immigrats: LA has a huge ABC population. As it stands, there's just Kiki, an ABG stereotype, and Bertram Tung. Since the Kuei-Jin in LA are also very new to the city, it'd be interesting if we got the perspective of a Chinese American Anarch or Camarilla vampire. There's a lot of potential to flesh things out while keeping to the neo noir vibe.
