The dub isn't really considered anything of the sort. A lot of people like it and that's fine. The "this is the version people think is better" is a pretty pointless discussion no matter which version it's about, for any show. People always act like pro-sub people are bad, but the other side isn't much better. Individuals will watch what they prefer and get the experience they enjoyed the most.

In the original 2000s show and the manga the Ishvalan's were terrorist who were attacking innocent Amestrian citizens that eventually lead to the excuse Bradley used to issue orders for a genocide.

This anime and Death Note have amazing English dubs, both are pretty much considered better than the Japanese. This dub especially taking place in a German like country works really well with English so I'm glad it's one of the few times you two watched a dubbed anime though I wish you could have seen Light and L in English, the voice actors added a lot of character especially to Light.

The issue of what Roy did in the war is complicated. Propaganda from within his country may have made him think he was in the right. Or just the rigid hierarchy of command in the military, as he was at that time a more junior officer, he might not have felt like he could say no if his superiors told him to burn something. Or maybe he just saw Ishvalans killing other solders on his side that he knew, and we know his main motivation is to protect his own. He almost certainly knew that what he was doing felt wrong, but may have had other motivators pushing him along that path, despite how horrible it looks with perfect clarity after.

Lust's death is actually one of the more horrifying things in the show for me. Being burned over and over is a nasty way to go and Laura Bailey's voice acting just adds to it. This is one of my favorite Al moments too. That's all he wants to do is protect people.

I think Alex Armstrong made those portraits based off Ed’s description (like a sketch artist making a portrait from a witness recounting). Armstrong’s just exceptional at portraiture (like we see when he draws Dr. Marcoh in ep 6) so it looks exactly like her. So no one other than Ed and Jean have seen Lust in person and survived up until this point, and Jean only knew Lust as Solaris.

There is fma brotherhood specials, its 4 ep, and episode 4 is about Roy (and Hughes) in academy and ishvalan war, you should watch it, maybe after you learn more about the war or maybe even before that. I really loved that episode with Roy, I watched it multiply times.
