Even in relative safety around campfires in the company of their fellows, the Hunters that delve into the Chancel are never truly safe. A few careless words shared between them are enough to plant the seeds of corruption for the most insidious of infections - that of memetic corruption - those few eldritch entities for whom merely knowing about them causes their corruption to begin taking root.
The most virulent of these malefactors manifests in stories told by Hunters of a strange green demon wolf - one who poses as a fellow Hunter exploring the Chancel. Some claim to have seen him in the flesh, while others only in fleeting glimpses or deep within their nightmares. Seeing him is enough for his corruption to strike - seeping into one's mind until thoughts of the verdant, bloated wolf become constant, and in relaying these increasingly-intrusive thoughts, those poor infected hunters end up passing on these growing delusions to their fellows.
Once firmly rooted, the corruption spreads from the mind to the body, slowly transforming the victims piece by piece to better resemble their corrupter, and instilling within them a deep obsession to seek him out. Unbeknownst to them, this desire means they're ripe for him to harvest - ready for him to activate the latent corruption he's sown through them to awaken their final transformation into his mind-broken minions.
He offers them a simple solution - an escape from their corruption. They simply have to pass it on to others instead. That strain of madness leads them to do just that, but in doing so, they become more like him the more of his corruption they spread, until they're indistinguishable
Here we see one of the possible Bad Ends from the Spunkborne campaign module - in which too many players have been corrupted by Desmo's assimilation, and his tainted brood have begun merging to flood the Chancel with his chaotic embrace, washing over it to make everything within part of his greater whole.
