WIP 190116

WIP Wednesday? Yeah, that can be a thing.

One of my first ideas in the script was to make them rat-people, not bats. Grif's phobia kind of sealed the deal with that, though. The *Burmecian* inspiration's still there, though, and I'll play with it a little more as this chapter goes on.

So I backed myself into a corner on page 10-04 by rendering the bat models without materials. I had a good node setup for lines with transparent backgrounds and thought, "It'll be easy. Just color the flats inside the lines." WOW, did that create an indiscernible mess of lines, enough to make your eyes cross. How do grown-ass adults do coloring books?? I heard that's a new fad.
I powered through it anyway:

...but won't be trying that again. Yesterday I took a little extra time to refine the models and apply materials.

I've barely started building the set. I need to adapt my mindset to the task. I've always hated doing backgrounds, yet looking back, they haven't turned out terrible. I just have to not overwhelm myself, and remember that for the most part people aren't looking at the backgrounds, anyway - that's small potatoes. Focus on what matters; scribble the rest. Impressionism?

Speaking of! Over in TPC, trying to toe a line between "scratchy mess" and "spent too much time on these lines."

There's a particular appeal to animatics, and the key is somewhere on that sketchy line. There's 35 shots in this 3-minute scene, with 5-to-12 drawings in each. I have an alarm on my phone that reads "10 shots." It presently takes an hour to do one, background and all, so I can't draw 10 shots a day at this pace. How fast do I go before the quality is sacrificed below an acceptable threshold of appeal? I wonder.

At some point I'll be able to make an episode every month. I bet my alarm will have a VERY interesting label by then.
