As you may have noticed in the last few weeks, Twitter imposed new restrictions on what data is given to logged out visitors. Now you can only see the top 100 post by likes of a user, but not necessarily the recent stuff.

This has had a big impact on bird.makeup ability to reliably forward new posts. I made changes so that if a post makes it to the top 100, it will be forwarded, but this is much less useful.

Additionally, I noticed that pinned tweets are still there and I added native support for that. Pins will be forwarded and are not affected by the top 100 limitation.

Crawling with actual logged in users is starting to be to complex for me with the time I can put on a side project like this. Luckily for us, there is another project, Nitter, that support creating accounts and crawling with them. I've added experimental support for getting users posts from Nitter. Right now, VIP accounts in the top 400 on bird.makeup will use this crawling system, and all others the top 100 system. This will expend rapidly as I improve support for Nitter and make it scale. If you can afford to, please also support Nitter, as they are essential for the future of this project.

Sorry about that whole inconvenience, I originally assumed that Twitter would not be willing to make their product worse and break functionality to prevent project like this, but I was wrong!

Instagram support is progressing! I am making changes so that Twitter isn't hard-coded anymore, and can support generic social networks. Once this is done, adding support for more social networks should be relatively easy. I additionally have code already to fetch users.

I think in the next few weeks, I should be able to launch an alpha version that supports searching posts and users, and following and with a few more weeks a beta version that actually crawls.
