Melodrama Analysis- "Hard Feelings/ Loveless"

After going back to discuss “Liability” in context, I blind-react to “Hard Feelings/Loveless”. I discuss Lorde’s incredible attention to detail regarding her music, diction, imagery and use of literary devices. I touch on her use of motif and juxtaposition as well.

Note- I realize that, during the reaction, I initially mistook when the “Loveless” portion of the song begins. However, I do still feel like this song is in three distinct parts and not just two. Part one is super vulnerable and shows the speaker mourning the death of the relationship. She seems hesitant to move on. Part two comes after a long, uncomfortable, and frankly difficult-to-listen-to instrumental. Part two is a bit harsher, but surer. The speaker knows what she has to do to move on and she is willing to do that. Part three, I suppose, is where “Loveless” actually begins. After silence and a “tape” audio, the speaker’s tone has completely shifted. She sounds mocking. Her words are bitter, bordering on malicious in parts, but her voice is sweet and sing-songy. This is another great example of juxtaposition.

I agree that the sounds totally add to the meaning of the song!

I love the jarring noises in the song. I think it really emphasizes her words and feelings. These are hard feelings and they are uncomfortable and I think the sounds help the audience really feel that. Every time I hear this song, I always close my eyes and really feel what she is saying during the instrumental part.

You are so welcome! Thanks so much for watching!

My favorite song on the album!!! I think my favorite part is the one after the jarring noises. I love the reflection on the good parts of the relationship and also accepting that it’s over and time to move on. My favorite lyric is “I care for myself the way I used to care about you” 🥺 I’m so excited to see you react to the rest of the album!! My second favorite is the reprise of Liability, so I really look forward to seeing you talk about that one. I love this album so much, thank you for doing this!!!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank YOU for your insights regarding the grocery store line! I feel like you all definitely helped me gain some meaning!

I completely agree! My heart broke for her!

For me, the tone of what you describe as the second part is still very sad and heartbreaking. She’s saying she’ll always remember their relationship, even the mundane stuff like buying groceries. This song is the most “melodramatic” song of the album. It’s so indicative of what a young person goes through after their first heartbreak. Utter despair to outright contempt in point zero seconds. Losing all hope in love. Feeling like you’ll never love again. Believing everyone in your generation is incapable of commitment. Sooo good. My favorite song on the album.

Thank you for this!!! This is one of my absolute favorites from melodrama and such a special song to me, but I’d never thought of it within the larger context of the album. I love what you said about how she utilizes summer, and the motif of dancing and how they shifts from the first four songs into liability+hard feelings. Honestly your analysis is making me love this album even more!! I’m so glad I joined your patreon to get these insights from you :) I see a lot of people have already commented on the grocery line—I always picture all the times I’d be at the store with my friends in my teens/early 20s and one person wanders off to find ice cream while someone else finds that cheese is on sale or whatever and the one person old enough buys the drinks—and you don’t have a list and just grab a bunch of stuff because you know you’re all hanging out later. OR, it could also be a reference to drug use, like you’re “drifting” mentally while you’re grocery shopping. It all feels very reminiscent of youth/teenage years!

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you are enjoying this series!

Hey English Teacher KP! ❤️ First of all, thank you so much for your work, your videos are amazing. I’ve always loved “Melodrama” album, but honestly, I have never understood it fully. And only now, thanks to you, I can see why it seemed so interesting to me! Secondly, I love your blind reactions - so fun to watch! And this album is just something, every next video seems like a new episode of a TV show, can’t wait to see where it’s going! And lastly, I am dying to listen to your thoughts on “Winter in the dark”, which is my absolute favourite and also the most difficult to understand 🥲🥹

Love this explanation! Thank you!

English Teacher KP

Yeah, that instrumental had me shook 😭😭😭 Your explanation of the grocery line makes a lot of sense! It's crazy to think she was a teenager when she wrote this!

English Teacher KP

I'm definitely excited to hear the rest of the album now!

English Teacher KP

OMG! It does! Great explanation!

English Teacher KP

It's a great song!

English Teacher KP

Ooooh, I didn't even think about her being from New Zealand! Great point!

English Teacher KP

There are so many great lines! I LOVE the ghost line! Thank you so much for watching!

English Teacher KP

Okay i am so glad you blind reacted to this because you had me literally laughing out loud at your reaction to the instrumentals that made you cringe lmao. And your reaction to the silence and then the taunting part had me dying! Great analysis. I never realized how deep this song was until now. The lyric about "drift buying groceries" had me picturing her and her bf playing around and doing that thing where you use the grocery cart like a ride and run and jump on it like when you were a kid. I'm not sure her exact age when she wrote this album, but i think around 18/19 and i believe it is about her bf who she had been with since she was an even younger teen (and before she got famous) so i picture that line as a way to show how young and immature their relationship was. But that she will look back on it fondly with playfulness. I agree with what others said that this song starts to take a more resentful turn which makes sense with the taunting loveless part at the end.

Lindsay Bennett

When she says "drift buying groceries" i imagine the two of them at the grocery store pushing the cart together like it's their baby carriage, just drifting slowly down the aisles, contentedly adding things to the cart, not in a rush and happy to do what is usually an annoying chore as long as they can do it together. Like their love was strong enough to make them enjoy even the tedious task of grocery shopping as long as they were doing it together: it allowed them to drift :)

there’s definitely a shift in the album after this song, it’s like she comes to terms with the end of their relationship and now she’s feeling resentful.

I like to think that those hard to listen to swells and sounds in the breakdown are the "winds of regret and mistrust" cause doesn't it sound like really fast wind blowing by your ear ?! it's the tough part of the winter coming in.

ky

omg my second fav on this album <3

ky

i don't know if you ended up looking it up but jungle city is a recording studio in new york city so definitely makes sense with that other fourth wall break in that line! i really love this album but i haven't really analysed the lyrics that much so i really love this series, also love that this is a blind reaction again! this video just made me realise the significance of the line "gonna wanna tape my mouth shut" in relation to another song (which you haven't listened to yet, but i'm sure you'll remember when you listen to it) i always thought the "this is the winter" line was super interesting because lorde is from new zealand so she probably has very different connotations to winter (not christmas, snow, etc. like a lot of people from the northern hemisphere) loved this video <3

Yeesss !! One of my favorites !! I also feel like the “our love is a ghost” part has a feeling of sudden emptiness like.. something was here but now it’s gone and all that’s left of it is the emptiness. Which would tie with the “lets give it a minute before we admit we’re through” . And in the chorus the part of the sweet words and fever leaving them in the cold, same thing. As if they were too enthralled in the passion of the relationship to realise it was ending and suddenly they found themselves ‘in the cold’ . I never realised until you pointed it out, how she starts getting more and more certain of her feelings and what she has to do as the song progresses ! That’s awesome! Thank you for the video ! It was great !!
