After going back to discuss “Liability” in context, I blind-react to “Hard Feelings/Loveless”. I discuss Lorde’s incredible attention to detail regarding her music, diction, imagery and use of literary devices. I touch on her use of motif and juxtaposition as well.
Note- I realize that, during the reaction, I initially mistook when the “Loveless” portion of the song begins. However, I do still feel like this song is in three distinct parts and not just two. Part one is super vulnerable and shows the speaker mourning the death of the relationship. She seems hesitant to move on. Part two comes after a long, uncomfortable, and frankly difficult-to-listen-to instrumental. Part two is a bit harsher, but surer. The speaker knows what she has to do to move on and she is willing to do that. Part three, I suppose, is where “Loveless” actually begins. After silence and a “tape” audio, the speaker’s tone has completely shifted. She sounds mocking. Her words are bitter, bordering on malicious in parts, but her voice is sweet and sing-songy. This is another great example of juxtaposition.
