Dance Fever Analysis- "Girls Against God"

I discuss Florence's use of diction, imagery, alliteration, allusion, metaphor and more in this track from Dance Fever. Moreover, I explore some of the motifs found throughout the album thus far!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I can't really express how much they mean to me. I also agree with you regarding that specific quote from the song. It is so powerful and so relatable!

Yes--- sacrifice seems to be such a big part of this album. I'm interested to see how this will play out throughout the rest of the album!

I love how you described all of this! The more I listen to it, the more I'm also convinced that it is, at least in part, inspired by COVID. You're right that there seems to be this hyperbolic notion of going against something so great, yet needing to process the rage in some way! I love it!

The last little devil bit is a part of the song! And it’s such an important part of it, I see it as a tone shift for the album as a whole. It’s also past tense, so which do you think she chose? :) I definitely think it’s a Covid inspired song, but I love how you can relate it to any situation because of the ambiguity. I also just love how it plays with exaggeration and hyperbole. The idea of going against god seems so impossible to win, it’s god after all. Whether or not you believe in any, god is a great metaphor for life’s circumstances, and waging a “Holy War” against things you can’t control is hyperbolic in a way. And it gets even better when she recognizes her insignificance as a “screaming speck of dust” but she’s still doing it anyway because of the need to feel the rage and process the emotions.

I think this is 100% a COVID song-- about the lockdown period when musicians didn't know if they'd ever be able to play live again. "Oh, tell me it's not over yet." "If you ever let me out, I'm gonna really let it out"-- I think referring to her rage. If she ever gets back onstage, she's going to really let God know how pissed she is that all this happened in the first place. The "I met the devil" part is part of the song, and I think you're right that it distills a big theme of the album that gets brought up in "King"-- the speaker can have a golden heart (be a mother and bride) or a golden voice (be King). She has to sacrifice something personal for professional ambition.

My favorite lines from this entire album are on this track. "When I decided to wage Holy War It looked very much like staring at my bedroom floor" Anyone who's had to overcome that internal monolithic voice that comes with anxiety and depression and for me personally religious trauma. Those complex emotions are really hard to swallow and when we're fighting our hardest it does look like we're just laying in bed staring off at something in the room. "And I know I may not look like much Just another screaming speck of dust" -this is bargaining to me. The speaker is saying so much about how they view themselves in comparison to their opponent or "God". it's a very polarizing image because she's like " oh yeah buck-O, how do you like these apples" and it's just giving a big Ole middle finger. 🤣 I just really love the ending as well because we ended up with Mermaids which was and amazing ending for the album! I hope you're doing okay KP! The world needs you, and I'm so glad I found this corner of the internet. Alot of these discussions have lead to some really great improvements in my personal poetry, and learning more concise ways to express emotion has been a huge deal for me. I'm very greatful!
