Life Update/ Dance Fever Analysis- "Prayer Factory"

In the second part of the video, I discuss the diction, imagery, mood and more throughout the interlude, "Prayer Factory".

2023-07-03 13:21:55 +0000 UTCThis lyric video is inaccurate. I have an official physical copy of the album on CD and the lyrics are written in the booklet as Florence intended. In the video the line “Ripping hotel sheets” is actually “Gripping hotel sheets.” Instead of the word “shiny” (as shown in the video) it’s written as “shining” in the CD booklet. As well as errors with the enjambment with the lyrics. It may not make a huge difference but I believe that it has some significance. I will type the lyrics exactly as shown in the booklet below, All the things that I ran from I now bring as close to me as I can Gripping hotel sheets with gritted teeth My montage of lost things My shining trinkets of grief Why don’t you give me a call Open my mouth yes I’ll take it all [sic] And all this work gone to waste You made me climb Then you shut the gate

2023-07-01 01:39:13 +0000 UTCYes! All of this is definitely coming through in her beautiful lyrics. I like how she has addressed the nuance of purpose. She's discussed the sacrifice and the hardships and the anxiety that go along with having a purpose and being super good at it. However, she also discusses how lost one feels without said purpose...the grief and emptiness and rage that one feels when that purpose is taken away. The dancing plague allusion is interesting to me because it again involves so much contrast and nuance. There's the idea that dancing is the ultimate freedom. Yet, during the dancing plague (as you mentioned) people danced themselves to death. The motifs of life and death and God and sacrifice and gender expectations/stereotypes are the perfect backdrop throughout this album. I'm interested to see how she continues to play with these ideas!

We’ll be waiting here for the next class when you can. As for the song, Florence stated that the abrupt end mirrors (again) how her work was interrupted by the pandemic. She worked hard her whole life and suddenly the gates of every theater were shut. In the beginning of the song I believe she is contemplating how she would always avoiding domestic life but were forced to hold tight to “all the things [she] ran from” once it was all that was available; how the isolation made her mad and destructive in grieving her “lost things”.
