The battles in reference to moments in the Vietnam War Where US troops allied with north vietnam fought in harsh jungle warfare against the south vietnamese that would use Guerilla tactics against the US troops. The Americans in response would end up on occasion firing on civilian targets that were slightly suspected of hiding the enemy viet cong(the southern vietnamese.) There are examples of wars like this all throughout history but Vietnam stands out cause its most recent and some of the battles were able to be broadcasted back to the US via good old television, hence the paris scene at the beginning of the episode. So in a way taeya was right about complaining about a history episode Lol Janeway wasnt duel weilding her tricorder was in her right sheath and the phaser in her left
