The Crash That Killed Concorde

I never got to travel on Concorde when it was still in service... but my older brother did. I asked him what it was like while I was researching this video, and he said it wasn't as great as it sounds.

Apparently the food and the service were both amazing - like being in a flying five star hotel. But the seats were cramped, with very little headroom. It was also incredibly loud - twice as noisy as being on a normal plane.

It was a good thing the flight was so short, he said, because the on-board toilets were so tiny that he decided just to hold out for the airport. And he made a point of stealing the Concorde-branded cutlery (since he thought it might be worth something one day) but has since lost it somewhere in his attic. Sigh.

That's really interesting, I didn't know about this, thanks.

I went to see it at a nearby museum also. From everything I'd heard I was expecting it to be the height of luxury, but you're right: my main impression was how narrow and dark and cramped it was!

Fascinating Horror

What really upsets me is that they had to wait until flying over the ocean to break the sound barrier. Imagine the disruption to the wildlife these flights caused. There is a book called "The Empty Ocean" by Richard Ellis. The book addresses a multitude of (human-created) threats to our oceans, with sound being one of them. All the noise caused by big tankers, cruise ships, countless boat engines, etc. actually disrupts the wildlife. Large marine mammals use "echolation" to communicate, critical for mating and hunting. I am sure countless other species are affected by noise too.

I regret never being able to travel on one! Getting to see it in a museum was closest I have gotten. I was amazed at how low the ceiling seemed and how narrow the aisle was! Definitely felt like a rocket!
