The SS Noronic

One detail that I didn't include in this video concerns the history of the SS Noronic. Interestingly, the day she was due to leave on her maiden voyage was a day of unprecedented storms on the Great Lakes - storms which claimed many other ships.

From this article in the Walkerville Times Magazine:

"Eleven vessels went down with all hands lost; eight others were completely destroyed, with 20 more left stranded on reefs and islands."

Fortunately for the SS Noronic, she delayed her departure and remained safely in port. If she had set sail as intended, her very first day out on the water could also have been her last!

Thank you! I usually keep music to a minimum as I want to keep the narration nice and clear, but sometimes (like in this case) a particular track really suits the mood of a given story.

Fascinating Horror

On an unrelated note, I like the soft classic music on the background of the "Background" part in this vdo. It seems to fit well with the mood of the ship during her glory days.

That would certainly be an interesting one to cover - especially as now there's a relatively strong safety culture on Japanese trains (at least as far as I've read). Have added it to the list, and will look at covering it soon!

Fascinating Horror

Any thoughts on doing the Amagasaki Train Crash (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amagasaki_derailment ) It's considered to be Japan's deadliest train crash since the 1963 Tsurumi rail accident. The investigation reveals that JR West had an extremely strict retraining regimen called nikkin kyōiku, that more often than not was psychologically abusive. The driver's fear of being reprimanded harshly over being even a minute late led him to overspeed and thus derail the train. It's an example on how excessively strict and punishing work ethics with little to no recourse should an error be made can lead to a disaster.
