What is a Mortsafe?

One of the few surviving examples of a mortsafe can be found in a graveyard that’s actually quite local to me. Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh is home to this magnificent specimen:

I’ve wandered around that kirkyard dozens of times, and I can remember seeing this strange piece of metalwork. Until now, though, I had no idea what its purpose was, nor just how old it truly was. As a matter of fact, on first glance I assumed it was used simply for storage!

I've seen this footage before! You're right, it is very graphic. And shocking as well - it's totally not something you expect to see in the middle of an ice hockey game. It's a violent sport... but this is such an unusual injury. Definitely keen to cover more sporting accidents like this!

Fascinating Horror

You know, I could imagine modern mortsafes cropping up in a zombie film or story... repurporsed, of course, to protect the living, not the dead!

Fascinating Horror

Cages keep the zombies in.

How about a video on the Clint Malarchuk incident? Clint is a now retired ice hockey goalie who is now mostly remembered for an incident in 1989 in which an opponent crashed into him. As the to men fell over, the opponent's skate went up in the air causing the blade to slice Clint's throat. Obviously blood started spilling all over the ice, but a medic was able to arrive and close off the wound quickly enough for Clint to be taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. Clint survived and was able to keep playing for a few more years years before retiring. Here's footage of the incident, but be warned that is is graphic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plvKlnguJVE
