The 2003 Northeast Blackout

There are so many unique stories from this event that I didn’t have space for in the main video. Here are just three (somewhat lighter) stories that I really enjoyed. I’m sure there’ll be plenty more in the comments of the video!

First, there’s this Eyewitness News Report from ABC7NY, which features an account of the blackout. The crew were filming a fairly run-of-the-mill story when the blackout began, and ended up sharing the power supply of their news van so that a mother could power her child’s medical device.

Then there’s the story of Luke Maloney Hall, from a small town in Ontario. The blackout ruined his birthday, with him spending most of the day bailing out water from his uncle’s basement (it flooded due to a failed pump). Despite this, he remembers the day fondly as a time when the community he lived in came together.

And finally there’s the story of this little town in Albany, which has its own power authority – one that feeds power into the grid rather than taking power from it. As such, they’ve gone through several historical blackouts without ever losing power – with the northeast blackout of 2003 being no exception!

Another interesting one for the list - thanks for the suggestion!

Fascinating Horror

Again, what a surreal experience - I love learning these little details from stories like this: the flares along the bus route and the people banging on the doors. It really brings a big event like this to life for me

Fascinating Horror

I remember this very well, I was stranded in Manhattan at my office on 42nd Street and I live in the Bronx. Some people did sleep overnight in the lobby of the building, where the newspaper/snack vendors gave people food. I was finally able to get an express bus back to the Bronx and got home @ 11 PM. Every time she had to stop people were banging on the doors to get in. It was like something out of a horror movie. The police had set up flares along the bus routes and our bus driver, a woman, did a heroic job getting us safely home. We all applauded when we got to the Bronx, she did a wonderful job.

How about a video on Thai Airways International Flight 311? Here's the episode of Mayday about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ann2NEqI-XM
