Lost in the Grand Canyon (Part Two)

Linda made a lot of mistakes during her time in the canyon, but one thing she got right was prioritising her need for water. It surprised me to learn that, in extreme circumstances, people can survive a very long time without food (but not very long at all without water).

In fact, so long as you’re fit, well and hydrated at the beginning, most sources suggest you can survive around three weeks without food – although you’ll get steadily weaker and more exhausted over that time as your body uses up its reserves.

But water? Without water, there’s no chance you’d survive three weeks: the average amount of time someone can survive without hydration is just three days. In an emergency situation, it turns out, water matters a lot more than food!

That's a pretty terrible death toll, all starting with a single cigarette. Will add this to my list!

Agreed! That's one thing she definitely did right - especially as it was in the 1970s when communication wasn't quite as easy as it is now

I’d also note that she did one other thing right: kept in touch with the people back home.

I'd like to see a video on Varig Flight 820. Similar to Air Canada Flight 797, Flight 820 had a fire start in the washroom, possibly caused by a cigarette discarded in the trash bin. Varig Flight 820 had 123 fatalities and 11 survivors.
