Alcoholism Pt 2: Relapse, Existential Crises, & Recovery

David Icenogle returns to the show, this time to patreon exclusively, to discuss his recent relapse, which occurred after the recording of our public episode On Alcoholism in March as well as after more than a year of continuous sobriety.

In this long, darkly funny, and heartbreaking conversation, Dave discusses his relapse, the causes behind it, mental health and existential crises, the psychological dynamics of addiction and relapse, and so much more.

Alcoholism Pt 2: Relapse, Existential Crises, & Recovery

Hope David is doing good now. I’m in recovery from addiction and alcoholism myself and I relate to his situation in many ways. I think we must all rally around each other to reject the current methods used for our treatment. Marxism itself has so much to offer all of us who are struggling. The dogma involved in “meetings” does not work for enough of us. More of us die each year, and there is no end in sight. It’s very hard to listen to David and his feelings because so many of us fall into the same negativity . David has been lucky as I have, but well over a hundred thousand of us a year are not so lucky. Capitalism, the “system” is ultimately responsible for the environment where these deadly errors can infect so many of us. Honestly I had to stop when he started talking about his brothers gun safe, and his realization in 6th grade. About 50 minutes in I had to pause it. The way these thoughts seep into every crevasse of ourselves is insidious. I experienced much of the same existential fears, but the ability to be here to understand and look bad on these thoughts is a great blessing. I hope to finish this episode sometime when it is not so triggering. Thank you Breht for having these conversations. So much to unpack here, we all need to be able to talk about and scientifically break these feelings and behaviors. Our connections to each other is essential. I hope all of you are doing well a d dealing with these thoughts, we will never achieve revolution until we break through these thoughts and feelings.

We're rooting for you, David. I wish we lived in a culture where it was easier for people to get the help that they need, but fuck, for now, here we are. Everyone should be proud of you for confronting your problem and trying to solve it, even if there are stumbling blocks along the way.

Matt
