Women Under Attack: SCOTUS & Roe v. Wade

In this Dispatch episode of Guerrilla History (and crossover with Revolutionary Left Radio), we discuss the newly leaked draft opinion from the Supreme Court of the United States what would overturn Roe v. Wade and strip the right of access to safe abortion to millions of American women. We try to frame this historically, and discuss the politics of this draft, which is set to be finalized and voted on in just over a month. A critical topic for us all to focus on right now, and to think together about what steps to take next.  The full text of the draft opinion can be found here: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/02/read-justice-alito-initial-abortion-opinion-overturn-roe-v-wade-pdf-00029504

Thanks for this episode, I really appreciated listening to it yesterday. Will this be available on other platforms in the upcoming days, or will it be Patreon only? It’s one I definitely want to share with some people who don’t subscribe.

I appreciate the feedback! I can definitely understand the criticism of the use of the word "female" in general. I obviously didnt pick the title, but ill talk to the GH folks about it. No ill intentions though, I promise. Just a clunky language choice. As for talking about women and mothers and reproductive rights, i do not think using terms like women and/or mothers in this context is necessarily excluding of anyone, nor is it intended to be. Its using common, colloquial and widely accepted language that specifies the primary targets of this ruling. Are there trans men or nonbinary people who dont identify as a woman but can still get pregnant, of course. and my love and solidarity extends to them, without a doubt. But I genuinely do not see how using terms like women when discussing reproductive rights is flagrant, bigoted, or excluding of anyone in and of itself. My friend and Red Menace co-host Alyson had this to say on the subject: "While it is obviously true that abortion is an issue that effects more than just women, it is equally obvious that overturning Roe is an attack on women. Now is not the time to nitpick over the need for gender neutral language, its the time to discuss the need for women's liberation which is a project that has always implicated and benefited more than just women". I find that argument and framing very persuasive and helpful personally.

I know you're all cis-hetero men, but you should know better than to conflate being capable of becoming pregnant and therefore the potential to need the legal right to an abortion with being a woman. After the recent episode of Guerrilla History about "female" development in western Africa, I'm just...???
