You might also be interested in reading Gerald Hüther's book "the evolution of love" where he talks about how Darwin's work has been distorted and how evolution and survival for human beings has been based on love and compassion. Huther is a neurobiologist.

Great episode, thank you for this! Smart choice of text as a launching off point, I just want to highly recommend Kropotkin’s “mutual aid: a factor of evolution” for a really enjoyable and important critique of what was, at that time, a growing trend of distorting Darwin’s work to emphasize an individualistic interpretation (natural selection), and completely abandon his findings on the role of cooperation and mutual support among various thriving animal populations.
