In this video, I explored harmony theory using the Circle of Fifths inside Bitwig Studio. I tried to break things down as simply as possible, especially for those who might feel limited by diatonic scales or the standard piano roll approach.
The Circle of Fifths is a way of visualizing musical relationships between chords and keys.
Moving clockwise by seven semitones (a perfect fifth) from C gives you G, then D, A, and so on.
Moving counterclockwise brings you to F, then B♭, etc.
I built a C major scale (all white keys).
From this, I showed how to create triads and basic diatonic chords:
C major (I)
D minor (ii)
E minor (iii)
F major (IV)
G major (V)
A minor (vi)
B diminished (vii°)
While useful, sticking strictly to diatonic chords can sound predictable or limiting.
I introduced a Circle of Fifths preset I made inside the Note Grid:
Major chords inside the circle.
Minor chords outside the circle.
This helps visualize non-diatonic chords and borrowed chords.
Example:
Instead of sticking to G major (V) in C major, I showed how using G minor (v) can create tension and color.
I built a Bitwig Note Grid preset that visualizes the Circle of Fifths:
Chords are laid out around the circle for easy selection.
You can trigger chords with mouse clicks or MIDI notes.
I recorded these chord changes into the piano roll for further editing.
I also created a simplified version:
The Circle of Fifths is shown as a list for easier automation.
You can switch between different scales during playback using a selector.
Perfect for improvising or generative music setups.
Breaks Free from Diatonic Limitation: Encourages experimenting beyond basic major/minor progressions.
Great for Melodic Improvisation: Record a chord progression, then improvise using a matching scale.
Hands-On Music Theory: See how chords relate visually.
Both presets are available for free download in the description.
Try experimenting with non-diatonic chords for more colorful progressions.
